Job Description

Consultant in Palliative Medicine

NHS Lanarkshire

NHS Lanarkshire is looking for an additional Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join its existing team of Consultants, and the wider multi-disciplinary team to deliver Specialist Palliative Care (SPC) in Lanarkshire.

A recent review of services, prompted by the desire to maximise efficient use of resources to reach more patients across all care settings, has led to the development of an innovative 'Hub' model where Consultants will work in teams based on each of the three acute University Hospitals in Lanarkshire and their surrounding communities. In addition to senior medical staff, the teams will be complemented by Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist (ACNS) and Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) colleagues. Teams will work flexibly across acute and community to ensure patient needs are met in the most appropriate setting. The aim is to proactively reduce unwanted and unnecessary admission, while providing patients with excellent symptom management and opportunities for future care planning in all care settings. We are seeking an enthusiastic, innovative colleague who can help shape the future of this service.

NHS Lanarkshire runs a busy SPC Advice and Triage line, offering remote advice to colleagues in primary and secondary care, arranging for in person review when required and managing all requests for hospice admission. The applicant would also join a 1:6 on call rota (frequency expected to reduce with further planned recruitment) covering all NHS Lanarkshire SPC services out of hours, including hospice beds.

Specific sub-specialty clinical, educational or research interests would be welcomed for discussion and may impact which 'Hub' would best suit the applicant.

The job is offered as a full-time post on a 10 PA basis (including up to 2 non-DCC) but applications will be considered from those wishing to work less than full-time.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Consultant level experience in Palliative Medicine.
  2. Ability to work flexibly across acute and community settings.
  3. Participation in on-call rota.

Informal enquiries regarding this post will be welcomed by Dr Kerry McWilliams, Clinical Director, or Dr Karen Harvie, Consultant in Palliative Medicine.

For any application queries, please contact Nicole Hetherington, Senior HR Assistant or via
