Hours: Full Time
Summary
At M&S, we believe in the power of storytelling with data - the ability to take complex, often technical, information and present it in a way that not only makes sense but also resonates emotionally with our audience. The Data Artist will be responsible for transforming data into visual stories that communicate key insights clearly, engagingly, and in a way that drives action.
You will work closely with cross-functional teams to understand business needs, craft meaningful narratives from data, and present those stories through innovative visualizations. Your role will blend data analysis, graphic design, and storytelling to create engaging, actionable insights that both inform and inspire the business. From executive-level dashboards to in-depth project summaries, your visualizations will bridge the gap between technical data and business strategy, making data accessible to non-practitioners and helping to shape key business decisions.

Being a part of M&S is exactly that - playing your part to bring the magic of M&S to our customers every day. Here are some of the benefits we offer that make working for M&S just that little bit more special:

- Competitive holiday entitlement with the potential to buy extra holiday days!
- Discretionary bonus schemes awarded based on how you achieve your personal objectives and our performance as a business.
- A generous Defined Contribution Pension Scheme and Life Assurance.
- A dedicated welcome to our teams with a tailored induction and a wide range of training programmes to develop your skills.
- Amazing perks and discounts via our M&S Choices portal to maximise your financial and personal wellbeing.

- Access to a fantastic range of wellbeing support for all colleagues including access to our 24/7 Virtual GP and PAM Assist to support you and your family.
- A charity volunteer day to support a charity or cause you're passionate about through a dedicated day away from work.
What you'll do
- Expertise in Data Storytelling: Proven experience in data storytelling, with the ability to turn raw data into coherent, engaging, and actionable narratives, including a deep understanding of how to use visualisations (charts, graphs, dashboards) to communicate a data-driven story and support decision-making.
- Proficiency with Data Visualization Tools: Advanced skills in using data visualisation tools like Power BI, Flourish, or D3.js to create interactive and impactful visualisations. Experience with graphic design software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Figma, with a strong sense of design aesthetics and a focus on clarity, simplicity, and effectiveness.
- Creative and Analytical Mentality: Ability to blend creativity with technical accuracy - using your artistic instincts to guide your choices while ensuring data is accurately represented with a strong understanding of data analysis, including experience with data wrangling, data cleaning, and preparing data for visualisation.
- Clear Communication and Collaboration: Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex data concepts into clear, visual narratives for non-practitioners and the ability to work cross-functionally with analysts, scientists, and business leaders to gather insights and craft stories that are both compelling and data-driven.
Who you are
- Data Storytelling through Visualisation: Transform data into narrative: You will take complex data and turn it into a clear, engaging, and actionable story. By applying data storytelling principles, you will help stakeholders understand not just the "what" of the data, but the "why" and the implications of key insights.
- Crafting Visual Narratives: Use visual design to clarify insights and highlight key messages within the data, ensuring that every data point serves the broader narrative.
- Design and Technical Execution: Build and deliver visually engaging data visualizations using tools like Power BI, Flourish, D3.js. Design infographics and other visual formats that highlight key insights and findings in ways that are digestible and meaningful to different audiences.
- Collaborate Across Teams: Act as a liaison between technical teams and business teams, helping translate raw data into actionable visual insights that drive decisions.
- Iterative Refinement and Innovation: Continuously refine and improve visual storytelling practices by seeking feedback from stakeholders and iterating on visual formats.
