Job Description

Data Engineer - Public Sector (Belgium)

Location: Brussels / Hybrid

Languages: Dutch, French, English (trilingual ideally - see note below)

We are supporting a major public sector organization in Belgium in the recruitment of an internal Data Engineer. This institution is responsible for critical infrastructure across the country and is currently investing heavily in its digital and data transformation. This is a long-term role within a stable, structured environment.

As a Data Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, building, and maintaining robust data pipelines that serve both operational reporting and advanced analytics use cases. The technical landscape includes a mix of on-premise systems - with strong ties to SQL Server environments and SSIS - as well as a progressive shift towards cloud-native solutions on Azure, such as Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, and Databricks. You'll bridge legacy systems and future-facing data platforms, helping to modernize how data is accessed and used across the organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and optimize ETL processes connecting multiple source systems to data warehouses and reporting layers
  • Ensure reliability, performance, and scalability of data infrastructure, both on-prem and in the cloud
  • Collaborate with BI teams, architects, and business stakeholders to understand needs and implement sustainable data solutions
  • Monitor data flows, implement governance best practices, and contribute to long-term platform evolution

Profile:

  • Strong experience in data engineering with tools such as SQL, Python, SSIS, and cloud services
  • Proven experience working in hybrid environments (on-prem + Azure)
  • Familiarity with data warehouse concepts, scheduling tools, and structured data lifecycle management
  • A pragmatic, autonomous mindset, with experience in complex and regulated environments
  • Language Note: While the official requirement is trilingualism (Dutch, French, English), we've been informed that for relatively senior candidates, fluency in just one national language (NL or FR) alongside English is often sufficient. Unfortunately, we don't make the rules - but we're happy to advise based on your profile.

This is a long-term opportunity to contribute to high-impact data initiatives in a collaborative public sector setting, with plenty of room for technical input and evolution.
