Gen Re currently offers an excellent opportunity for a Data Science and AI Engineer to an appropriately qualified individual within the Global IT Services. This role may be performed remotely within the United Kingdom, but the individual must be able to report on-site into our London, United Kingdom office in a hybrid approach, as needed.
Context of the Role
The Data Science and AI Engineer is a member of the Enterprise Data and AI Services (EDAS) Team within Global IT Services. In this capacity, the candidate will work with teams of passionate and skilled engineers, architects, and data scientists responsible for building data pipelines and supporting all of the analytics, business intelligence, data science, and AI needs across the organization.
The candidate must be highly collaborative, organized, and analytical, and is expected to partner effectively with other teams within IT, business, and service units on an ongoing basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage in the evolution of analytics and AI based on the strategic objective of being a data-oriented and analytics-driven company.
- Collaborate with business functions on defining business cases for data, analytical, and AI projects based on an understanding of value drivers and knowledge of technical possibilities.
- Initially, the focus will be on using modern AI services to optimize core business workflows.
- Collaborate with both the business and IT teams to define business problems, refine the requirements, and design and develop analytics systems or end-to-end solutions.
- As an analytics and AI system champion, engage with stakeholders to communicate the vision for analytics, understand and address challenges, diplomatically overcome resistance to adoption, and demonstrate value.
- Network with key business stakeholders to be an advocate and ambassador for the analytics systems.
- Develop and maintain statistical programming standards and best practices to be advocated by IT and used by business.
- Regularly meet and discuss with analytics and AI system consumers on refining production deployments.
- Establish best practices integrations across modern systems, tools, and technologies.
- Prepare solution proposals for business cases based on up-to-date knowledge of technical possibilities and overall data, analytics, and AI strategies.
- Ability to translate data-oriented proofs-of-concept, and end user analytical models, into enterprise-scale data analytics applications.
- Develop organizational knowledge of key data sources and be a valuable resource to people in the company on how to best use data analytics to pursue company objectives.
- Promote the use of DevOps and MLOps in the delivery of solutions by internal and external development teams.
- Keep up to date on the industry best practices in data, AI, and advanced analytics.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in Computer Science, Information Systems, a science or engineering discipline or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
- The ideal candidate will have a combination of IT skills, data governance skills, analytics skills, AI skills, and insurance or re-insurance knowledge with an advanced technical or computer science degree.
- Significant experience leading the designing, building, testing, and maintaining of analytics and AI systems (e.g., Posit).
- Significant experience working in cross-functional teams and collaborating with business stakeholders in support of (multi-)departmental initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience in the orchestration of AI services to deliver solutions to business workflow challenges.
- Experience applying and advocating DevOps to both IT and business units.
- Advanced programming skills, including debugging, data manipulation, analysis, and visualization.
- Advanced knowledge of analytics and AI tools and systems and how to use them effectively.
- Creative and innovative thinking.
- Ability to network and be recognized as an expert in analytics and AI systems across a variety of business and IT roles.
- Ability to deliver high-quality work and meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to lead discussions, presentations, and training for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Expert in the statistical programming language R or Python.
- Strong experience with analytics tools such as Posit Workbench, Posit Connect, Azure Databricks, and Power BI.
- Strong experience with relational databases (e.g., MariaDB, Oracle) and non-relational databases.
- Strong experience in creating reproducible work products.
- Experience in Agile-like methodologies and capable of applying DevOps principles to data pipelines and analysis to improve the communication, integration, reuse, and automation of work products.
- Experienced in software development lifecycle methodologies and current technology industry best practices.
