How will you make an impact in this role?The Global Compliance & Ethics team plays a critical role in protecting American Express, our brand and colleagues through practical, solution-focused guidance on regulatory and ethics-related matters. Within Global Merchant and Network Services Compliance, the GMS International Compliance team performs second-line oversight of the merchant acquiring in International, ensuring a robust and sustainable compliance risk management framework. The team is responsible for providing Compliance oversight of GMS management and mitigation of strategic multi-country compliance risks, defining and executing a second line monitoring and oversight framework and executing core components of the American Express Compliance Program for the Latin America, Canada and Caribbean region (LACC).
Reporting to the Vice President, Compliance GMS International, the Compliance Director will be responsible for:
- Developing and implementing a framework for strategic risk assessment, monitoring and oversight across International.
- Effective challenge and oversight of GMS risk reduction and mitigation activities, as required under the Compliance Risk Management Program and the broader Operational Risk Program.
- Maintaining a comprehensive and sustainable compliance program for the GMS business in the LACC region.
- Point of escalation for the GMS Line of Business Compliance regional teams, GMS and Compliance stakeholders, ensuring appropriate and timely resolution of risks and issues.
- Communicating the status of the GMS International compliance program, including strategic initiatives, risks, issues and key metrics to leadership.
- Collaborating with a broad group of stakeholders including General Counsel Office, Market Compliance Officers, Global Financial Crimes Compliance, Global Privacy Office, GMS Control Management and broader GMS business teams, to ensure compliance with Enterprise-wide policies and procedures and local regulatory requirements applicable to acquiring activities, processes, products and services.
- Providing Compliance input on the development and evolution of centrally managed GMS policies, products, capabilities, processes and controls to enable the business to comply with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Demonstrated experience leading a Compliance Risk Management and oversight program across multiple markets in larger, complex organisations, addressing regulatory requirements including in the areas of Anti-Money Laundering, Sanctions, Anti-Corruption, Data Privacy, Business Conduct and Payments Regulations.
- Demonstrated Compliance expertise in risk assessment, risk identification and articulation and in risk escalation to senior management and relevant company risk management forums.
- Proven ability to set the agenda on complex, evolving legal and regulatory requirements, providing effective challenge, questioning assumptions, critically assessing information.
- Strong relationship and collaboration skills with the ability to build relationships and influence a broad group of stakeholders, at all levels.
- Outstanding communication skills with the ability to communicate complex topics in a clear and effective manner to senior leaders across the organisation.
- Knowledge of merchant acquiring and alternative and emerging payment models and associated regulatory compliance risks.
- Experienced people leader with ability to drive results in changing and ambiguous situations in a complex matrixed organization.
- University Degree required, Compliance/Legal qualification preferred.
