Job Description
Overview

The Director of Professional Development will report and work closely with the Senior Associate Vice-President for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development to provide vision and oversight for all forms of faculty development initiatives. This includes determining appropriate support, resources, programming, and training opportunities to facilitate faculty professional growth, engagement, onboarding, and retention. The Director will employ a continuous improvement process to a diverse range of faculty development programs designed to support teaching, leadership, career advancement, and research, ensuring we meet objectives at the program, individual, and institutional levels, along with expectations for accountability.

The Director of Professional Development will have a history of demonstrated success in bringing projects to fruition while providing creative and resourceful solutions to complex challenges related to faculty advancement and career development. Additionally, the Director will serve as a strategic expert, leveraging various digital innovations to transform teaching and learning, patient care, and improve operational efficiency.

Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the vision of professional development of faculty within the context of the Virginia Health Sciences at ODU mission.
  • Maintains advisory/consultative relationships with subject-matter experts and centers of excellence that provide input to or deliver training and development of faculty.
  • Uses evidence-based literature to contribute to the development, implementation, and assessment of programs (including mentoring) initiated by the office.
  • Maintains an active calendar of local, national, and international professional development opportunities for faculty at all career stages and is responsible for planning the professional development offerings each academic year.
  • Organizes faculty development events, workshops, seminars, learning communities, and conferences designed to improve teaching, learning, and scholarship.
  • Seeks funding opportunities for continued faculty expansion and growth.
  • Maintains an up-to-date website with all the programs the office supports.
  • Takes a lead role in conducting annual needs assessments to determine the professional needs of faculty in various ranks, interprets analyses, and proposes programs to address these needs.
  • Manages the Professional Enrichment Grants and makes suggestions to the SAVP on funding.
  • Creates a new faculty orientation program designed to create a welcoming environment for all faculty.
  • Designs a professional development competency framework to address various digital innovations and professional development needs within EVMS.
  • Conceptualizes, designs, and organizes faculty development events that integrate various digital innovations to enhance teaching, learning, and scholarship.
  • Communicates effectively with faculty, students, administrators, and external stakeholders about the Digital Innovation goals, activities, and outcomes.
  • Serves as an ambassador of EVMS on external committees (AAMC/SIG).
  • Researches and evaluates emerging learning technologies applicable to the delivery of faculty development programs to reach a broader audience, including community faculty.
  • Takes a lead role in redesigning the office website and keeps it up-to-date.
  • Supervises staff supporting the Academy of Educators.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the SAVP.
  • Takes a lead role in conducting scholarship related to faculty affairs and professional development.
  • Becomes responsible for tracking professional development efforts to ensure compliance with accreditation (SACS, LCME).
  • Attends and presents at professional meetings as determined by the SAVP.
  • Manages programs specifically focused on meeting the Academy of Educators goals.
Qualifications

PhD, EdD, or equivalent in Education, Organizational Development, Human Resource Development, Training and Development, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or a related field.

Considerable experience in a field relevant to the duties of the position, such as Education, Organizational Development, Professional Development, Teaching/Training. Experience in medical or health sciences education is preferred.
