We are looking for an Environmental Incident Investigator to join Thames Water on a permanent basis.
The purpose of the role is to drive performance, and directly impact pollution reduction, one of the top three deliverables for Thames Water. Our environmental performance is monitored and evaluated by our regulators using a range of measures, such as our compliance with our environmental permits, and the number and severity of pollution incidents that we cause, which in turn informs our Environmental Performance Assessment (EPA).
As part of the Environmental Incident Investigations team, you will comprehensively investigate incidents to a high standard, report information to the Environment Agency about potential pollution incidents and ensure our records align, extract event learning, and feed into continuous improvement workstreams.
What you will be doing as an Environmental Incident Investigator?
- Fully investigating pollution incidents and preparing incident reports within required timescales.
- Interpreting scientific reports and data regarding environmental impact and operational performance.
- Providing written reports to the regulator for pollution incidents to ensure they are recorded correctly and writing challenge documents where anomalies are identified.
- Conducting and assuring detailed root cause analysis to understand what has gone wrong and what actions and learning need to be implemented to prevent a repeat incident.
- Working closely with field teams to ensure that incidents have been fully understood and all required actions have been completed.
- Providing feedback to other business areas through training, presentations and reports to ensure that environmental incidents are managed and responded to appropriately.
- Coaching and supporting others in your own area of expertise.
- Engaging and liaising with the Environment Agency in respect to live and historical pollution incidents.
- Collaborating within the team and wider business and feeding into discussions around pollution reduction initiatives.
What should you bring to the role?
- A passion to improve our environmental performance.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written (e.g. report writing, using neutral, factual language suitable for a regulator).
- Deliver exceptional service through an enthusiastic, positive and proactive approach, taking initiative and accountability for your role while working accurately within a busy team.
- Excellent planning & organisation skills, with the ability to balance different workstreams and achieve statutory deadlines.
- Evidence of working flexibly across organisations, building and/or improving ways of working and embedding them into organisations.
- Excellent IT literacy, including good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- FULL UK licence is required.
What's in it for you?
- Starting salary £30,400 per annum.
- WeCare, a variety of health and wellbeing services for you and your family including up to 10 specialist, counselling sessions, 24/7 access to a virtual GP, get fit programmes and access to a nutritionist.
- Benefits on Tap, access to discounts, cashback and instant vouchers.
- Generous Paternity Leave, including 4 weeks paid and an optional 2 weeks unpaid.
- Enhanced Maternity Leave, 26 weeks full pay and 13 weeks half pay!
- 26 days holiday per year increasing to 30 with the length of service (plus bank holidays).
- Access to lots of benefits to help you take care of you and your family's health and wellbeing, and your finances - from annual health MOTs and access to physiotherapy and counselling, to Cycle to Work schemes, shopping vouchers and life assurance.
