Job Description

Staffordshire University now seeks a new Governor with a background in strategic financial planning to join the Board.

Candidates will have worked in senior financial roles in an organisation (in any sector) of a similar or larger size than the University (c. £170m turnover). They will bring an understanding of financial modelling and will be able to stimulate thinking on the Board around the ways in which the University might best prepare itself financially for the future. They will be able to ask strategic questions and constructively challenge the Board and Executive. Whilst there is a preference for candidates who are qualified accountants, the Board is open to receiving applications from those who have a strong financial background (in areas including but not limited to: investment and treasury management; tax; corporate finance; pensions; strategy consultancy) but do not have this qualification or are qualified by experience. Previous non-executive experience is not necessary and a full onboarding programme will be offered to the successful candidate. Individuals with a regional connection would be particularly welcome to apply.

New Governors will be passionate, driven advocates for the organisation as a civic University, helping to open up opportunities and generate real social value.

The Board of Governors is made up of independent Governors, two staff Governors, two student Governors, and the Vice Chancellor (ex officio). The Independent Governors bring valuable and diverse experience from business, community, education and industry.

As well as being advocates for the University, its staff and students, Governors have strategic oversight of the Institution's activities, which are delivered and managed by the University Executive Board. They ensure that the strategic plan is being delivered, that the University is delivering on its mission to transform people, transform places and transform society, and that the University's KPIs are met.

In return, Staffordshire's Governors receive support to develop their professional skills, gain valuable board-level strategic experience within a successful organisation with a £170m turnover, and have the chance for considerable networking opportunities. Furthermore, the University supports Governors with a comprehensive onboarding programme together with professional development opportunities which are fully funded.
