Job Description

A leading environmental consultancy with a national footprint is seeking an experienced Laboratory Manager to lead and manage their asbestos-focused NATA-accredited laboratory based in Newcastle.

This business has built a strong reputation across Australia for delivering reliable asbestos and hazardous materials consulting services. With a team of highly skilled professionals-including Licensed Asbestos Assessors and industry veterans-they support projects across residential, commercial, industrial, and civil sectors.

About the Role

This is a senior-level position ideal for someone who can hit the ground running, bringing a high level of autonomy and technical knowledge. You'll oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, ensure quality compliance with NATA standards, and provide leadership to a team of technical staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and coordinate all aspects of the asbestos testing laboratory
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with NATA accreditation standards
  • Perform and oversee asbestos analysis including fibre counting, bulk sample analysis, and soils testing
  • Liaise with consultants and clients to deliver accurate and timely results
  • Maintain quality systems and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
  • Mentor and support junior lab staff and technical officers
  • Prepare technical reports and assist with audits where required
Requirements:
  • Extensive experience in asbestos analysis within a NATA-accredited environment
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant standards and procedures (e.g. AS 4964)
  • Demonstrated leadership or lab management experience
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset
Desirable:
  • Formal qualifications in science, environmental science, or a related field
  • Previous experience managing soil asbestos investigations
  • NATA signatory status or experience working towards it
