Job overview The Lead Research Nurse (cardiology and emergency medicine at RSCH) is an integral member of the Research and Innovation (R&I) management team supporting the research delivery of key performance targets. They will be accountable for effective professional nursing leadership and proactive resource management for the clinical research within their delivery team. This will include the cardiology/emergency medicine portfolio as well as other clinical specialities across University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will exercise advanced expertise in relation to coordinating clinical research, levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in line with Good Clinical Practice and research legislation, policies and frameworks. They will be involved in the strategic development of their portfolio working closely with the clinical and R&I teams to ensure that their portfolio reflects the R&I strategy and True North objectives.

They will be an expert leader in setting up, planning, executing, monitoring and maintaining research protocols for multiple local and national clinical trials ensuring that data collected is to the highest standards. They will have ultimate responsibility for the nursing element of the research projects. The post holder will be a specialist at delivering research in cardiology and across a range of topic fields demonstrating advanced knowledge and skill in the relation to their clinical, research and education responsibilities.

Main duties of the job
  1. Act as a positive role model through the provision of effective and compassionate, professional leadership and demonstration of competent, accountable clinical research practice.
  2. Provide day-to-day visible, inclusive, accessible and authoritative leadership in R&I and across their allocated research portfolio and its associated clinical areas.
  3. Ensure the delivery of patient/participant research protocol driven care, is of the highest standard.
  4. Actively support the clinical areas, R&I and the Trust in the provision of high quality, modern, dynamic and patient centred research in accordance with the Trust's True North programme and the R&I Strategy.
  5. Be responsible for optimising patient/participant access to research within the clinical areas and across the Trust.
  6. Will be responsible for the recruitment and performance management of staff to ensure delivery of healthcare standards and Trust objectives.
  7. Liaise with colleagues within the Clinical Research Networks and other organisations to enhance performance and develop research practice.
  8. Deputise for the Head Research Nurse as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Act as a role model by demonstrating excellent communication and listening skills with patients/participants, relatives and staff.
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of research within the Trust through membership of departmental and corporate meetings, taking the lead as directed.
  • Work as an effective member of the clinical and R&I teams, with respect to service development, business planning and service delivery ensuring the achievement of local and national targets and objectives.
  • Responsible with the Chief and Principal Investigators for the professional and operational delivery of high-quality clinical research standards across their portfolio. Ensuring that protocols are adhered to, and patient/participant safety is maintained in accordance with Good Clinical Practice, research regulations, policies and frameworks.
  • Provide professional leadership, motivation and supervision to maintain responsibility for the overall management and quality of care within the research studies being undertaken under their direct supervision.
  • Ensure the appropriate management of patients within the research projects. This will involve direct patient contact and liaison with medical staff and other members of the multidisciplinary teams.
Person specification Qualifications
  • First degree in Nursing or health related subject. Registered Nurse.
  • Master's degree in cardiology or related area or working towards or equivalent demonstrable experience.
  • Registered General Nurse/Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Clinical
  • Evidence of clinical experience as a specialist nurse in cardiology specialty.
  • Evidence of excellent managerial, leadership and organisational skills.
  • Extensive experience in the management and running of multi-centred cardiology research studies and the management of staff.
