Linux Systems Engineer - Brussels Belgium

Intro/context:

The Consultant is expected to provide services to the Digital Solutions & Process Efficiency unit.

Unit provides high quality corporate solutions/information systems for SG, Cabinets and associated entities, enabling the successful implementation of the Commission's Digital Transformation and EU policies.

The Unit manages, develops and maintains a portfolio of about 20 systems in the domains of document management, legislative life cycle, and policy and administrative support. Key systems are: Transparency Register, Register of Commission Documents, Better Regulation Portal, EU-Law Systems, Hermes Preservation Services.

The Unit is responsible to manage and develop collaborative solutions with a particular focus on collaborative platforms involving Microsoft 365 tools including Teams, SharePoint online, etc. based on the business needs at SG. The Unit is also in charge of analysing and migrating existing SG SharePoint on premise sites to SharePoint online, Teams and other integrated M365 tools to increase the overall business process efficiency.

DESCRIPTION OF THE TASKS

The tasks to be performed include:

• Practical validation and implementation of the solutions recommended or designed by the Software or Infrastructure Architects
• Design, development, tests, documentation, release control, maintenance and technical support of infrastructure software components and services matching the specifications.
• Proof of concept, prototyping of infrastructure solutions
• Technical responsibility for infrastructure development projects
• Assistance and support to Software Architects and Information System developers
• Provision of technical studies, technical expertise, technical evaluations in relation with Information Systems infrastructure
• Production of technical documentation
• Assistance with configuration of the system for production deployment and in training administrators and users
• Participation in meetings with the project teams.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

• Good knowledge of web applications, apps Back End applications, infrastructure script, or other development area, as required to perform the specified tasks.
• Capability to write clear and structured technical documents.
• Experience in component-based and service-oriented applications development or configuration.
• Understanding modelling languages or tools (eg UML)
• Ability to cope with fast changing technologies used in application developments.
• Ability to understand, speak and write English C1 is mandatory.
• Ability to understand, speak and write French B1 will be an advantage.

SPECIFIC EXPERTISE

• Knowledge and experience in administration of the Linux system operating system, in particular Red Hat Linux 8+ (installation, Firewall and maintenance scripts)
• Knowledge and experience with Docker, Kubernetes and/or Podman.
• Knowledge and experience in administration of the Apache HTTPD server, including SSL.
• Knowledge and experience in configuring file transfer systems SFTP server (eg ProFTPD) and/or Rsync.
• Knowledge and experience in administration of the Tomcat Java Application Server
• Knowledge of relational database management of MySQL/MariaDB (installation and general maintenance)
• Knowledge and experience in AWS public cloud hosting.
• Knowledge of Oracle DB is an asset.
• Knowledge of ansible Scripting is an asset.
• Knowledge in Python Scripting is an asset.
• Knowledge in PHP 7+ and WordPress 6+ is an asset.
• Knowledge of Preservica or other document management and archiving systems is an asset.
• Knowledge of relational in Oracle Weblogic is an asset.
