This is an exciting opportunity to join the Breast team as a locum consultant Breast Radiologist (symptomatic and screening) for initially 6 months, with an extension up to 12 months or beyond where circumstances suit all parties.

Main duties of the jobBristol Breastcare Centre delivers both the screening and symptomatic services across 2 sites in Southmead and Weston General Hospitals. You will have the opportunity to have a varied and interesting job plan taking part in the full range of clinical activities in addition to engaging in teaching and audit activities within the department.

Initially joining on a locum basis for up to 24 months you will have support from the clinical leads and director of screening to establish a set of meaningful objectives and a rewarding job plan, enabling opportunity to work towards a substantive consultant post within the breastcare service.

Job responsibilitiesYou should demonstrate recent experience in breast imaging within the NHSBSP, be skilful interpreting and performing screening and symptomatic mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies and wire localisations.
(i) Clinical Duties
The postholder will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care and in liaison with consultant colleagues, continuity of care when the postholder is absent. The appointee will have equitable working conditions to their colleagues.
(ii) Teaching and Supervision of Junior Medical Staff & Students
The postholder will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff. Where appropriate, the postholder will be named in the educational contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.
In liaison with the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education the postholder may be required to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education.
(iii) Study & Research
The postholder can request up to a maximum of 30 days study leave within a 3-year period (pro rata for part-time posts) as stated in the Terms and Conditions of Service.
The Trust is committed to ensuring that support is given for Continuing Medical Education.
The postholder will be required to fulfil the requirements laid down by the relevant Royal College, and to fulfil the requirements for revalidation laid down by the General Medical Council. The Trust will provide the postholder time and financial support for these activities. All radiologists will have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser. Support for radiologists going through the revalidation process will also be provided by the Trust.
The post holder will have SPA time available to lead on the co-ordination of the radiology research undertaken within the unit. The Breast service at North Bristol NHS Trust are actively involved within a number of research projects including PROSPECTS trial, FAST MRI and SMALL. This post will work alongside a Breast Consultant Surgeon Research Lead and a dedicated team of research nurses on site. The post-holder will be required to work within the wider team to lead on the development and expansion of the breast radiology research undertaken by North Bristol NHS Trust.
(iv) Audit
The postholder will be required to take part in a Clinical Audit Programme. The Trust has an audit department which supports and monitors such activity. There is an active Trust Clinical Audit Committee.
Person Specification Qualifications & Registration- MBBS and FRCR or equivalent
- Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice.
- Must have a CCT in Clinical Radiology or equivalent and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment. Specialist Registrars that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date.
- Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD)
- Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
- Minimum of 2 years postgraduate experience including higher Radiology training, 5 years as a Radiology registrar in an approved training post or equivalent
- Experience in Breast screening (Symptomatic and Screening)
- Experience in Breast clinical examination, assessment and one-stop clinics
- Breast interventions procedures including ultrasound guided and stereo core and VAB biopsies, fine needle aspirations and wire localisations under mammographic and ultrasound guidance
- Proficient in General and cross-sectional radiology
- Experience in audit projects
- Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues
- Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
- Completion of a general management course or programme
- Knowledge of principles of research
- Proven teaching ability
- Willingness to undertake teaching of medical undergraduates & postgraduates
- Research experience
- Evidence of publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management
- Ability to lead a team and form effective working relationships within a team
- Ability to inspire, motivate and develop junior medical staff
- Ability to work independently as well as part of the multidisciplinary team.
- To balance individual requirements against those of the Directorate and Trust as a whole
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels
