The Role:
The Microservices Engineering Lead is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining microservices-based architectures that enable scalability, reliability, and agility in the bank's digital ecosystem. This role is pivotal in driving the adoption of modern engineering practices, enabling seamless integration of systems, and fostering a modular, service-oriented architecture. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Microservices Engineering Lead collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver high-performing and secure services that align with the bank's strategic goals.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Successful implementation of microservices architecture with measurable improvements in scalability and modularity.
- Reduction in deployment times and incidents through CI/CD and proactive monitoring.
- Compliance of microservices with architectural, security, and operational standards.
- Continuous improvement in service uptime, latency, and overall performance metrics.
- Team engagement and retention within the microservices engineering function
Responsibilities:
Microservices Development and Architecture
• Lead the development of microservices-based solutions, ensuring modular, reusable, and scalable components.
• Collaborate with the Architecture team to align microservices with the bank's architectural guidelines and scalability requirements.
• Implement API-driven development practices to facilitate seamless communication between services and external systems.
Operational Excellence
• Establish and maintain CI/CD pipelines to ensure rapid and reliable deployment of microservices.
• Oversee Level 3 (L3) support for microservices-related issues, conducting root cause analysis and implementing preventive measures.
• Optimize service performance, reliability, and scalability through proactive monitoring and performance tuning.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
• Work closely with Change Delivery to align microservices initiatives with project timelines and business priorities.
• Partner with IT Operations and Information Security to ensure microservices adhere to operational and security standards.
• Collaborate with data and digital engineering teams to integrate microservices into broader digital transformation efforts.
Adoption of Modern Practices
• Champion the adoption of containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud-native technologies.
• Promote the use of Agile, DevOps, and automated testing methodologies in the engineering team.
• Evaluate and implement emerging tools and technologies to enhance the microservices ecosystem.
Team Leadership and Development
• Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of engineers to deliver high-quality microservices solutions.
• Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning within the team.
• Identify skill gaps and provide targeted training opportunities to ensure technical excellence.
Essential Knowledge & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven experience in designing, developing, and deploying microservices architectures.
- Strong knowledge of API development, containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure).
- Expertise in programming languages such as Java, Python, or Go, and experience with frameworks like Spring Boot.
- Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
- Excellent leadership and stakeholder management skills.
Desirable knowledge & Experience:
- Experience in the banking or financial services sector.
- Familiarity with event-driven architecture and tools such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
- Knowledge of security standards, data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR), and compliance frameworks.
Reporting and Relationships
- Reports to the Director of Engineering.
- Collaborates closely with Architecture, IT Operations, Change Delivery, and Information Security teams.
- Works alongside Digital Engineering and Data teams to drive integration and innovation.
