Ophthalmology Consultant Accident & Emergency and Paediatrics

The post is comprised of 8.6 programmed activities (PAs), of which 5.3 provide direct clinical care (DCC) and 2.3 are for supporting professional activities (SPAs). The post also consists of 1 programmed activity (PA) dedicated to the Named Safeguarding Doctor role for the Trust for Adults and Children.
The post is split between adult and Paediatric services within Moorfields Eye Hospital and requires Saturday working on a 1 in 6 timetable. The detailed job plan is included below but may be subject to change in response to service demands. Weekly service teaching takes place at City Road.
Applicants are required to hold FRCOphth, or equivalent, and be registered with the General Medical Council. Fellowship training in paediatric ophthalmology and formal teaching experience would be advantageous.
Main duties of the jobProvide High Quality Care to Patients
- The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration and hold a licence to practice.
- To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
- To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
- To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.
Performance Management
- To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:
- Clinical efficiency e.g. timeliness indicators, clinical indicators and the development of ambulatory pathways.
- Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-attendance rates.
- Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively.
- Operational efficiency e.g. demand management.
Research Governance
The post holder will be expected to comply with all Moorfields policies pertaining to research governance, ensuring that all research activities are approved by the Trust and an appropriate ethics committee before commencement.
Research, Teaching & Audit
Moorfields is an important research institution and each individual is expected to contribute to research, development, teaching, and training within the service.
Professional Development
The Trust provides opportunities for CME and CPD, allowing the candidate to take advantage of these opportunities.
There is provision for at least 2 weeks paid study leave with expenses if appropriate each year.
Person Specification Education and Qualifications- FRCOphth or equivalent
- CCT or equivalent training.
- Full GMC Registration
- Be on or eligible for the GMC specialist register
- Higher Degree
- Completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology
- Extensive knowledge of General Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Emergencies
- Extensive knowledge of paediatric ophthalmology and paediatric ophthalmic emergencies.
- Relevant research methods training with up-to-date GPC
- Awareness of current issues affecting the NHS & UK Higher Education.
- Training in clinical supervision as defined by the GMC
- Formal teaching experience
- Training in educational supervision as defined by the GMC
- Ability to lead and coordinate teams
- Significant Ophthalmic sub-specialty experience
- Surgical skills
- Demonstrable experience of taking a leading role in management, teaching, or research
- Involvement in clinical leadership roles such as participation in QuIPP projects & service improvement projects.
- Experience of managing ocular emergencies
- Experience of public & patient engagement.
