We have an exciting position in the paediatric metabolic CNS team:

The Southwest regional metabolic department cares for over 650 patients across the region. The metabolic CNS is often the first point of contact for enquiries from patients, relatives, and other professionals.

Patients require specialist tests for diagnosis and monitoring; many are at risk of becoming ill very quickly and need emergency management rapidly and appropriately.

Key Responsibilities

A metabolic CNS will:

  • Organise emergency alerts and illness management
  • Conduct specialist tests, investigations, and infusions
  • Provide education to health care professionals and families
  • Provide practical and emotional support to patients and families with rare disorders

This is an opportunity for a paediatric nurse with excellent verbal and written communication skills to work in a specialist team and autonomously, using their own initiative, demonstrating problem-solving skills and excellent organisational skills.

This role is essential in supporting patients and their families from diagnosis, ongoing care, and management to transition or end of life care. You must be able to work flexibly to provide a safe, friendly, and efficient regional service.

You will be part of the established CNS team providing care to all aspects of the metabolic service.

Main Duties of the Job
  • Provide patients and staff with specialist advice to manage complex symptoms for both inpatient and outpatient care including emergency alerts and illness management
  • Develop, improve, and promote the service ensuring the delivery of high quality, cost-effective care utilising the support and guidance of senior colleagues
  • Develop and share expertise within the multidisciplinary team
  • Develop the skills to act as a resource in the care of patient needs, ensuring an optimum level of service to patients and their carers
  • Work closely with community, hospital, relevant network staff, and organisations to ensure an effective seamless service
  • Provide effective communication systems of support for patients
  • Provide education to professionals, patients, and their families
  • Build up a skill set to embed patient and public involvement within the sphere of specialist nursing practice
  • Ensure that all patients and families are aware of all treatment options, including clinical trials
  • Work as patient advocate, to help negotiate the patient journey and ensure optimum care is provided to each patient
  • Support patient investigations and care including CNS led investigations and patient infusions e.g. enzyme replacement therapy
  • Coordinate and plan patient assessments as per care plans and national monitoring e.g. NICE managed access agreements
  • Provide cross cover to the Paediatric Metabolic, Batten's, and Barth Syndrome CNS service
Person Specification Qualifications and Training
  • RSCN/ RN Child Branch
  • Current NMC Registration
  • 1st Degree in nursing or health-related subject, willing to undertake/working towards
  • Qualification in Teaching and Assessing
  • Evidence of masters level academic study or willingness to work towards Masters (in relevant health-related subject)
  • Clinical skills e.g. venepuncture, cannulation
Knowledge & Experience
  • Appropriate proven leadership and management experience
  • Proven commitment and experience, evidence in teaching
  • Appropriate post registration speciality experience
  • Experience of undertaking research or audit projects
  • Evidence of commitment to research-based practice or evidence of project work undertaken
