Based: Battersea

Salary: £35,000 - £37,000
Contract: Full Time, 12-month fixed term contract

Work Arrangement: 40 hours per week, Hybrid/Office

Role Overview:

This role aims to make the health and wellbeing benefits of Battersea Park even more inclusive. Working as part of a major National Lottery Heritage Funded project to restore a well-known feature in the centre of the greenspace, this role will work with Enable's Parks and Community Development Colleagues to find and implement ways to break down physical, cultural, and behavioural barriers to the park.

Reporting to the Heritage Programme Manager, this person will help to tackle the inequalities that research has shown that people of colour and people living in low income areas face when accessing greenspaces. They will identify how existing park visitors reflect the local area, and work with community leaders to find opportunities for engagement, education and meaningful involvement for a wider range of people in the park.

The Parks Team a passionate group of professionals, who work together to maintain and improve Wandsworth Council's parks, commons, playgrounds, allotments and other greenspaces. We are keen to recognise, value, manage and enhance the biodiversity and plant heritage of our landscapes and contribute to a healthy planet and the wellbeing of our communities.

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

This role will be responsible for developing an activity plan that will support in securing funding for the next phase of this exciting project.

  • Lead an expert advisory group of Enable staff, Council Officers and Community Leaders to identify existing physical and perceived barriers to access in Battersea Park.
  • Review existing monitoring and evaluation methods and propose recommendations for record gathering and keeping, including reviewing digital platforms such as HUQ and Measure Up.
  • Implement processes that ensure a wider range of people are involved in the planning, management and maintenance of Battersea Park by working with external contractors and building on Enable and the Council's current consultation practices.
  • Developing inclusive consultation and engagement materials that encourage responses from hard to reach people.
  • Develop opportunities for volunteering and Citizen Science Training with council, parks and community development staff.
  • Incorporate community responses into final designs and workplans by collaborating with the Capital Development Manager and Landscape Architects.
  • Lead on the creation of an Activity Plan, according to the requirements set out by the Heritage Fund, that supports greater inclusion, diversity, access and participation in heritage.
  • Lead on the development of an accessible and inclusive interpretation plan, overseeing research by the Battersea Society.
  • Wandsworth Council's London Borough of Culture: Contribute by identifying potential for collaboration with existing events and leisure activities.

Skills and Experience:

  • Expertise in community inclusion and engagement: Proven experience or relevant qualification in engaging with varied communities, building relationships and mobilising groups around specific topics.
  • Demonstrable commitment to EDI principles: Knowledge of best practice for ensuring diversity, equality and inclusion are embedded into work programmes, policy and communications.
  • Experience in activity development: Experience indesigning and delivering training programs for volunteers, with a focus on effective instructional techniques and adult learning principles.
  • Completing community consultation processes that inform activity and work plans.
  • Volunteer management: Including health and safety risk assessments and ensuring positive outcomes.
  • Project Management: Proven ability to monitor, evaluate and report on progress, adapt to changing circumstances and solve problems creatively and effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.

Desired but not essential:

  • Community Development monitoring and evaluation processes such as participatory appraisal and ripple-effect mapping
  • A keen interest in the natural environment and heritage landscapes: Experience in developing and implementing citizen science projects or nature education programs, with a focus on community involvement and educational outreach.
  • Knowledge of biodiversity monitoring and accurate data collection including a track record of expanding the wildlife database in urban greenspaces
  • Establishing and growing volunteer groups: Knowledge of relevant governance structures, volunteer recruitment approaches and confidence in volunteer training.
