Principal Clinical Scientist (Nuclear Medicine)

The Imaging Physics group, part of the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering, is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced individual to participate in the provision of expert Medical Physics support to the Nuclear Medicine department at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust (SFT). As a HCPC registered clinical scientist and MPE, you will be responsible for providing specialised scientific and technical support in radiation protection, radiation dose calculations, and radiation protection training to ensure the safety of staff, patients and visitors at SFT.
This is a part-time (0.2 WTE), fixed term post (until September 2025) and you will be expected to spend at least one day per month on site at Salisbury District Hospital. The remainder of your time will be spent at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, based within the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering.
Main duties of the jobThe main duties of this post include:
- Participate in inspections by government departments and regulatory authorities (HSE, CQC, EA)
- Provide radiation protection advice for patients undergoing nuclear medicine procedures and perform calculation estimating risks from radiation exposure. Provide same to staff and clinicians in respect of different imaging modalities
- Perform periodic testing on nuclear medicine equipment and support installation, commissioning and acceptance testing of any new equipment
- Perform optimisation of nuclear medicine exposures
- Act as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) under IR(ME)R for nuclear medicine
- Collaborate with and support the work of the appointed Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) for Nuclear Medicine
- Investigate complex equipment problems to identify solutions
- Provide any necessary training and instruction to staff and students including radiation protection training of referrers, practitioners and operators under IR(ME)R

Person Specification Qualifications- Relevant MSc or high degree
- HCPC registration as clinical scientist
- MPE registration (Nuclear Medicine/Diagnostic Radiology)
- Highly developed specialist knowledge and extensive practical experience in Nuclear Medicine

Salary: £53,755 to £60,504 a year, pro rata
