Job Description

An industry-leading transport and infrastructure consultancy is seeking a Principal Transport Planner to join their Development Planning team in Leeds. This role offers an excellent opportunity to take on a leadership position, managing high-profile projects and providing strategic transport planning advice to clients across the public and private sectors.


What you will be doing:
  1. Lead the preparation and delivery of transport assessments, travel plans, and transport strategies for a wide range of development projects.
  2. Provide technical leadership on complex transport planning matters, ensuring high-quality outputs.
  3. Manage client relationships and act as the primary point of contact for development-related transport planning projects.
  4. Oversee and contribute to junction capacity assessments and modelling using software such as Junctions 10 (PICADY/ARCADY), LinSig, and TRICS.
  5. Take responsibility for project management, ensuring work is delivered on time, within budget, and to a high standard.
  6. Lead engagement with local authorities, stakeholders, and developers, supporting planning applications and transport strategies.
  7. Mentor and develop junior team members, providing technical guidance and career support.
  8. Contribute to business development, including tender preparation and identifying new opportunities.
  9. Support public inquiries, appeals, and expert witness work when required.

What experience you need:
  1. Degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, or a related field.
  2. Proven track record of managing projects and teams, with the ability to lead on technical delivery.
  3. Strong understanding of UK transport planning policies, development control processes, and stakeholder engagement.
  4. Proficiency in transport modelling software, including Junctions 10, LinSig, and TRICS.
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing reports, presenting to clients, and attending public consultations.
  6. Ability to develop new business opportunities and contribute to company growth.
