Protective Security - Senior Blast Consultant

Location: United Kingdom

Contract: Permanent

Hours: Full time

About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic senior Civil, Structural or Mechanical engineer to join our expanding design team specialising in blast modelling, damage assessment, protection engineering and risk based advisory. Our specialist services support projects worldwide providing expert technical advice and guidance covering a diverse and challenging range of structures and material types.

The successful candidate for this role will be a motivated and experienced senior level engineer with a good academic background linked to robust project experience covering design and assessment for extreme loading scenarios. A strong ability and understanding towards the application of numerical methods is important, particularly modelling the effects of blast using computational fluid dynamics.

A key skill will be the ability to explain complex ideas and solutions to clients, designers, government advisors, and wider team members in an accessible manner. Supporting projects with a set of proportionate security-based recommendations and sensible engineering solutions in line with a wider defence in-depth strategy is an important focus.

The ability to guide, mentor, and inspire junior engineers and CAD/BIM technicians will form a key part of all project deliverables. Your commitment to timely project delivery coupled with technical accuracy and rigour will form an exemplary discipline example.

Creativity and innovation in thought are valued at QCIC. We would describe the successful candidate as being able to 'think around corners' using the benefit of experience and logical reasoning to discount any unwise course of action. Overall, a willingness and passion to drive and deliver in-depth analyses examining blast and ballistic loading of structures for a wide range of interesting projects is important.

The successful candidate will report to the Technical Director and will be a key player in the growth and development of an international team. The appointed engineer will deputise for the Technical Director when required and be responsible for disseminating work activities across a specialist team.

What you will do

  • Lead, conduct, and substantiate the simulation of non-ideal blast loading using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) checked by best-practice methods of hand-calculation.
  • Lead, conduct, and substantiate the simulation of dynamic loading response using equivalent single degree of freedom (SDOF) methods linked to allied assessment techniques.
  • Define and lead the establishment of reasonable blast loading performance criteria or limits of failure for a range of materials and structural elements given demanding circumstances.
  • Perform and oversee important calculations to quantify the probability of human injury and building damage given a range of scenarios, limitation,s and statistical input parameters.
  • Perform and oversee important calculations towards the design and assessment for the suitability of glazed façade and cladding systems.
  • Deliver and advise upon protection engineering and code compliant design of structures and materials remaining focused on the project risk based framework.
  • Provide robust client advice towards options for risk management and further mitigation.
  • Interpret, apply and contribute to threat & risk assessments forming the core design basis.
  • Manage colleagues in BIM & CAD to facilitate workflow and information management.
  • Lead the production of clear and concise analysis reports for clients including, statistical effects summaries and support presentations with helpful graphic explanations.
  • Attend client meetings on behalf of the Technical Director where required.
  • Prepare basic proposals and manage budgets/resources as delegated.
  • Prepare and deliver threat, vulnerability risk assessments where required as an important precursor to security projects and explosion consequence analysis.
  • Assist with design projects requiring Vehicle Dynamics Assessment (VDA) and impact load evaluation (bespoke or standard) for Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) and site specification.
  • Work in coordination with a multi-disciplinary design team of architects, engineers, cost consultants and project managers to integrate our design solutions into the building design.
  • Strongly contribute towards new and exciting research and development initiatives for Protective Security within the field of blast and ballistic loading of structures.
  • Actively pursue continuing professional development activities within the wider remit of maintaining personal and departmental excellence.

What we are looking for

  • An experienced senior blast consultant who has previously worked within a consulting business environment or who has provided design experience with a contractor/end client.
  • Understanding of latest modelling processes and computational methods for the determination of explosive based effects; including appropriate modelling software applications.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, and best-practice industry guidelines.
  • An ability to produce designs for projects according to relevant Standards and design codes under minimal supervision.
  • An ability to undertake project development including preparation of briefs, scope of works etc. and completion of technical tasks within the framework of the Company's Quality Assurance procedures.
  • Able to lead on design segments of projects with a deep understanding of the need to manage projects to programme and budget working in co-ordination with the wider Design team.
  • A senior engineer that has achieved professional qualification with the Engineering Council (e.g. CEng MICE) or is reasonably nearing completion, with the further drive and passion to become an accredited member of the Register of Security Engineers & Specialists (RSES). Guidance, support and mentorship opportunities will be provided towards key professional development and commensurate qualifications.

NB: The successful candidate will be required to pass our security screening procedures and those of our client(s) where applicable.
