R&D Tax - Senior Science / Engineering Consultant

The opportunity

An exciting opportunity to work in EY's Global Grants Credits & Incentives team based in our central London office, alongside other STEM professionals, as well as tax and accounting colleagues.

As a Senior Science/Engineering Consultant, you will work with a variety of clients from owner-managed businesses to multinational groups, who are at the forefront of developing cutting-edge technology.

The successful candidate will lead interviews with senior technical personnel at our clients across various industries to identify the scientific and technological aspects of their R&D projects that qualify for R&D tax relief. You will actively participate in writing and reviewing reports of clients' R&D projects and engaging in extensive client communication.

In addition to working directly with existing clients, you will support business development opportunities and cross-sector claims.

Your key responsibilities

• Work effectively as a member of a project team, exhibiting strong communication skills and collaborating with team members of different skill sets.
• Write and review compelling technical project reports to highlight key technical factors of client projects supporting R&D tax claims.
• Interact with clients' senior technical and engineering staff to develop a comprehensive understanding of projects and identify how aspects meet the R&D Guidelines.
• Conduct data analysis and calculations to quantify project expenditure.
• Apply advanced problem-solving skills and critical thinking to project execution and delivery.
• Build and maintain relationships with clients to provide high levels of service.
• Deliver high-quality advice and solutions to major clients, ensuring management of risk and reputation.
• Adapt and flex existing knowledge to different sectors and build on core capabilities.

Skills and attributes for success

• A strong interest in science, technology, and engineering problems.
• Industry-based experience in dealing with technological challenges faced by professionals in engineering design, experimental processes, and product development.
• Ability to adapt to and learn about different industry sectors, such as automotive, aerospace, civil, defence, food & drink, life sciences, and electronics.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to produce concise summaries of information.
• Strong attention to detail and first-time accuracy.
• Interest in project and company finances and tax treatment.

To qualify for the role, you must have

• Degree qualified in Science, technology, or engineering.
• 2+ years of industry experience in science, technology, or engineering.
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills with a collaborative approach.
• Flexibility to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.

Ideally, you'll also have

• Previous R&D tax experience is advantageous.
