Job Description
Registered Mental Health Nurse - Forensic Services We are the only forensic inpatient unit within the Trust, and we have a wonderful opportunity for a Band 5 Registered nurse in the unit.

The unit is a 20-bedded male forensic low secure unit; we have two wards, an 8 bedded admissions and assessment ward and a 12 bedded rehabilitation ward (still within the low secure umbrella).

The team provides 24-hour inpatient support for our patients, who suffer from severe and enduring mental illnesses, have a history of offending behaviour, often a forensic history and require a low secure provision due to risks to others (the public) and at times themselves.

You would be working as part of a close team, being able to provide an effective, high quality and evidenced based pathway to support our patients through their low secure pathway, considering risk and aiming for discharge into the community.

We work closely with the forensic community teams, our provider collaborative IMPACT (Commissioners), other secure services and are part of the Quality Network Forensic Mental Health Services with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Experience in forensic / secure services would be a high advance or a keen interest in the area with some knowledge. You should be passionate to help all patients to gain and maintain optimum mental and health, and support rehabilitation safely into the community.

Main Duties of the Job The post holder will provide a professional role model for the delivery of high-quality nursing care.

The post holder will ensure that service users have up to date evidenced-based care plans that meet the needs of service users.

The post holder will be responsible for creating and reviewing care plans, risk assessments / risk management plans, safety plans and Positive Behavioural Support plans (PBS).

Ensure evidence-based practice and research awareness is used as the foundation for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care.

Be responsible for ensuring the Care Programme Approach is applied to practice and that opportunity is fully provided to support service user/carer involvement in decision making processes.

You will be required to attend Multi-disciplinary Meetings (MDM), CPA meetings and Tribunals for your named patient, and at times present other patients on your ward.

Ensure legislative requirements are maintained (Mental Health Act, Medicines Code, Mental Capacity Act etc).

Use effective interpersonal skills that relate to service users, carers and team members on an equal basis.

Ensure a multi-professional/agency approach to care is maintained, valuing the interface of professional roles and responsibilities.

Facilitate service user responsibility and choices for healthy living, and the ability to determine their own lifestyle within the notion of health promotion.

  16. Ensure trust professional guidelines are maintained for record keeping.
  17. Post holder will support the development of the Nursing Service.
  18. Post holder will ensure the Trust Policy for Clinical Supervision is Implemented; this will include having personal Clinical Supervision from a suitable person.
  19. Post holder will proactively explore opportunities for and take lead on developing reflective practice within clinical areas.
  20. The post holder will support the development of standards set within The Essence of Care.
  21. The post holder will actively explore opportunities to enhance health promotional interventions in their widest sense.

  23. The post holder will ensure person-centred care is delivered.
  24. Ensure where necessary the Child/Adult safeguarding Procedures are adhered to.
