Job overview

The Physiotherapy team is highly regarded within Therapy and Rehabilitation Services at National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Band 6 physiotherapist to join Therapy and Rehabilitation services.
All Band 6 PT staff work with well-established interdisciplinary teams and rotate through specialised service areas including the Neuro Rehabilitation Unit, Intensive Upper Limb Rehabilitation Service, Neuro out-patients and Neuro in-patients, (including Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Stroke Services - HASU & ASU).

Band 6 rotations are for 9 months and offer the opportunity to develop skills in the assessment and management of patients with a wide range of complex and rare neurological disabilities. You must have a substantive postgraduate experience in a physical, neurological setting.
Effective communication and a positive approach to the management of complex disability are essential.

Regular supervision and support for continued professional development is offered, as is the opportunity to work on projects within your peer group.

Main duties of the job

• Provide specialist clinical skills; assessing & treating patients with complex neurological presentations, using advanced manual techniques & clinical reasoning skills to determine impairments & disabilities, & to formulate a diagnosis/hypothesis & prognosis.
• Formulate, plan and deliver a specialised, individual patient centred physiotherapy treatment programme based on sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, outcome measures, excellent reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills e.g. therapeutic manual physiotherapy techniques, patient education, vestibular exercises classes etc.
• Plan timely, effective discharges, collaborating with the wider MDT.
• Demonstrate an awareness of current developments in neurological physiotherapy integrating, as appropriate, the available evidence into clinical practice, including national guidelines.
• Take part in the emergency respiratory physiotherapy on call & weekend rotas (emergency & HASU cover). To work as a lone practitioner when on call & often when working the weekend.
• Accountable for the professional and clinical supervision of physiotherapy undergraduates, undertaking teaching and individual performance review.

• Deputise for the band 7 physiotherapist in their absence taking responsibility for the day-to-day operational management of the team (band 5 & assistant staff) when necessary.
• Accountable for own professional development.
• Effective communication with all staff, patients, families & differing services within the community.
• Evidence based audit and research projects to further own & team's clinical practice relevant to the area.

Person specification Education/Qualifications/ Training
  • Degree/ or equivalent in Physiotherapy
  • Registered Physiotherapist (HCPC)
  • Evidence of attendance on specialist Post graduate neurosciences courses (e.g. Normal movement)
  • Active member of a neurosciences interest group
  • Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
Experience
  • Broad post-graduate experience at appointment, of which 6 months is specific neurosciences post graduate experience
  • Proven experience and competence in assessing and treating a variety of neuroscience patients
  • Documented evidence of continuing professional development
  • Evidence of having worked unsupervised on an emergency on call and weekend rota assessing and treating patients with deteriorating respiratory and neurological status
  • Evidence of active participation in in-service training programmes
  • Involvement in undergraduate training of student physiotherapists
  • Evidence of participation in research and audit.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Ability to work unsupervised as a competent autonomous practitioner.
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to manage own workload assessing and treating acute, chronic and progressive complex and challenging patients and to determine priorities
  • Application of sound clinical reasoning to a diverse neurologically impaired patient group demonstrating specialist analytical skills and use of objective measures.
  • Demonstrate good time management, prioritising and changing plans as appropriate to allow for day to day changes in staffing and patients conditions.
  • Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance
  • Evidence of initiative
  • Demonstrates understanding of principles and practice or Clinical Governance e.g. health and safety and risk management.

Other Requirements
  • The physical skills and capabilities for the assessment and skilled therapeutic treatment of patients with acute, chronic and progressive neurological disability both on the wards and in the therapy treatment areas
  • The ability to work unsocial hours on the emergency on-call and WE rota.
  • The ability to travel to NHNN within 45 minutes or to be prepared to stay in an on-call room when necessary
