Job Description
Senior CF ST4+ in ICM (Specialist interest in Echocardiography) University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (279)

Senior Clinical Fellow (ST4+ or equivalent) in Adult Intensive Care Medicine with a specialist interest in Echocardiography.

Day-to-day care of patients on the adult neurosurgical and general Critical Care units. Full-time including participation in a full shift rota system (48 hours per week).

Applications are invited for appointment to Senior Clinical Fellow with specialist interest in Echocardiography (ST4+ or equivalence) for a Fixed Term period from August 2025 for 12 months.

This is an excellent opportunity for those who are looking to increase their experience in a busy tertiary intensive care unit and gain qualifications and experience in echocardiography either pre or post CCT. The job would also be suitable for those working through the certificate of eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) route to certificate of completion of training in intensive care medicine.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

  • The Critical Care trust doctor must ensure that patients are managed in a timely and appropriate way in all aspects of critical care: resuscitation, stabilisation, working diagnosis, adequate monitoring, treatment, and discharge.
  • Proficient in detailed handover of complex patients.
  • Prompt assessment of the critically ill patients referred to ICU, work closely with the Outreach Team, reviewing and manage unstable patients on the ward.
  • The trainees will participate in the daily consultant ward round and review all admissions.
  • Coordinate and evaluate the suitability for admission to ICU in consultation with the ICU Consultant.
  • Communicate regularly with patients' relatives.
  • Identifying patients suitable for discharge and liaise with ward teams.
  • Attendance and participation in the critical care teaching (lectures, journal club presentations, M&M, Clinical Governance).
  • Other areas of management can be arranged, based on the trainee's achieved competencies and requirements.
  • Complying with UHSx infection and patient safety guidelines.

Job responsibilities

Minimal requirements to apply for this post:

This post is aimed at trainees at ST4+ level or equivalence please do not apply for this post if you do not have this experience.

To be able to demonstrate clinical experience of at least 2 years of critical care experience in addition to complementary specialities of anaesthetics, emergency care and medicine.

To be able to demonstrate independent practice in:

  • Advanced airway management including endotracheal intubation and management of tracheostomies.
  • Placement of invasive lines including CVP, arterial and renal replacement lines.
  • Placement of chest drains.
Person Specification Experience and Qualifications
  • Basic Medical Degree.
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice.
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent.
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support, Advanced Paediatric Life Support or equivalent.
  • European diploma in intensive care medicine or FFICM.
  • Primary FRCA/MRCP/MRCEM.
Clinical Skills and Experience
  • At least 2 years' experience in critical care medicine as dedicated placements.
  • Working at a senior level compatible with ST4+.
  • Advanced airway skills - 6 months or more of dedicated anaesthetic placement.
  • Independent placement of invasive lines - CVP/arterial line/renal replacement lines.
  • Experience of neurosurgical intensive care.
  • Experience of cardiothoracic intensive care.
  • Additional experience in complementary specialities including emergency medicine, acute medicine, renal medicine, respiratory medicine, paediatric critical care.
Knowledge
  • Appropriate level of clinical knowledge / up-to-date.
  • Knowledge and use of evidence-based practice.
Organisation and Planning
  • Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams.
  • Understanding of: NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints.
  • Demonstrates an ability to organise and prioritise.
  • Evidence of managerial skills: Achievements/ Course attended.
  • Rota management.
Academic and Research
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of research.
  • Evidence of participation in audit or research that has impacted clinical practice and service provision.
  • Research experience including API/PI.
  • Publications.
  • Prizes and honours at postgraduate level.
  • MD/PhD.
  • Good clinical practice.
  • Completion of Audit loop.
  • Evidence of engagement in patient safety projects.
  • Appropriate progression of career to date with minimal career breaks without adequate cause.
  • Looking for a career in ICM either as a single or dual specialty.
  • Evidence of portfolio that is working towards a CCT in ICM as part of CESR.
