Send job Company At LightOx we are developing novel, light-activated therapeutics for the treatment of early forms of oral cancer, and to fight antibiotic-resistant infections found in wounds. We are looking to expand our R&D team to progress our goal of bringing our innovative light-based treatments to the clinic. LightOx operates from offices and science laboratories in North East England. Job Description We are seeking a driven, enthusiastic and experienced synthetic organic chemist to join LightOx's Chemistry team as a Senior Chemist at our site in Newcastle upon Tyne. You would be working as part of a supportive team to develop novel light-activated drugs that could change the lives of patients around the world. The ideal candidate will be able to develop and execute the synthesis of novel structurally-varied molecules, and interpret an array of experimental data to propose new structures and influence our R&D strategy. Following a satisfactory probationary period, this post is permanent. Remuneration will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Essential Skills & Experience A BSc/MSc/MChem in Chemistry or a related discipline A PhD in synthetic/organic chemistry or medicinal/biological chemistry, or related field. Demonstrable experience in designing and carrying out multi-step syntheses of small molecules, with expertise in troubleshooting challenging synthesis pathways, and ability to deliver samples of novel molecules at suitable purity for biological testing. Experience of interpreting experimental data from a wide variety of analytical techniques including NMR, MS, HPLC, and UV-Vis/fluorescence spectroscopy, and ability to draw conclusions from biological testing. Strong communication skills with experience of communicating technical details and ideas to a range of internal and external stakeholders. Ability to work with the team to identify laboratory risks and put in place effective H&S plans and monitoring. Capable of applying sound judgment in prioritising tasks and problem-solving by evaluating feasibility, urgency, and overall strategic impact.
