Job overview

The posts advertised are a unique opportunity for Trust Doctors to gain a broad and varied experience of anaesthesia and intensive care in West London as part of the established Imperial LiPA Training Programme. The post holder will rotate through multiple hospitals within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust as well as the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Royal Brompton Hospital, Moorfields eye hospital and Hillingdon NHS Foundation Trust. The posts commence in Aug 2025 for one year in the first instance, extendable to July 2029, subject to satisfactory assessments and the post holder's requirements. A minimum of three years prior anaesthetic experience, the Primary FRCA (or equivalent) and an understanding of UK medical practice is required for this post.

Main duties of the job

Successful candidates will rotate through the various hospitals in order to cover the breadth of the 2021 Anaesthesia curriculum by the RCoA, and can be supported in their application for a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR), if they wish. Clinical rotations will include specialist clinical domains including Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics, Paediatrics and Acute and Chronic Pain. There are also opportunities to pursue special interest areas (SIA's) in a number of surgical sub-specialities. Numerous opportunities are also available to the post holder to obtain evidence and gain competencies for non-clinical domains including Leadership, Management, Education, Research and Safety and Quality Improvement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This clinical trust doctor post will rotate through hospitals on a 6 monthly basis for one year initially. However the post can be extended up to 4 years in total, dependent on the clinical and educational needs of the post holder. Rotating through multiple hospitals will enable the post holder to gain experience in most aspects of anaesthesia and intensive care required by the UK anaesthetic curriculum. The length of time spent in each hospital will be tailored to the post holder's educational requirements. Post holders will be supported in their CPD activity with an annual study leave allowance of 30 days and a study leave budget of £2000. The main site for the post holder will be Hammersmith Hospital at the Du Cane Road site. The successful candidates will work with their designated educational supervisor or clinical lead for their sub-specialty area to design and develop a programme of clinical work that suits their individual professional goals and objectives. Trust Doctors will also be encouraged to join in and become an integral part of the departmental academic, clinical governance and audit programmes. The post-holder is expected to work in a professional and courteous manner with the nursing, paramedical and clerical staff, and surgical and other medical colleagues, and the managerial staff.

  • On GMC's register with License to Practice
  • Primary FRCA or Equivalent test of knowledge recognised by the GMC for the portfolio pathway
  • Final FRCA or equivalent
