GUY'S AND ST THOMAS' NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

Out of Programme Training Experience (OOPTE) in Clinical Toxicology (ST4-7) and Senior Fellow in Emergency Medicine 12 month post £61,825 - £70,425.00 pa. excl. of London Zone

We are recruiting to these 12 month OOPTE in Clinical Toxicology and Emergency Medicine that will be based at St Thomas' Hospital and will start from August 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter; we would also consider a deferred start in February 2026. This post will enable an ST4-7 level trainee in Emergency Medicine (or international equivalent) to develop and expand their skills in Clinical Toxicology in a specialist centre and to undertake research in Clinical Toxicology. The post will be split 50:50 between Emergency Medicine and Clinical Toxicology. The post holder will participate in the ED night (60%) and weekend rota (75%) of the fulltime post.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Toxicology: You will have the opportunity to undertake specialist training in Clinical Toxicology, with training in both inpatient and outpatient management of poisoned patients. You will have the opportunity to undertake clinical toxicology research in an area of interest of the department (e.g. recreational drug toxicity, deliberate self-poisoning) during the OOPTE; it would be expected that this would lead to submission of paper(s) for publication. You will have the opportunity to help deliver Clinical Toxicology education as part of the portfolio of the clinical toxicology department.

Emergency Medicine: You will participate in a middle grade rota working with other senior ED trainees and supervising junior middle grades, FY2s and ENPs. The Emergency Department is led by twenty-five Adult and ten Paediatric Emergency Consultants. The Department sees over 150,000 new patients per annum and has a separate Paediatric Emergency Department associated with the Evelina London Children's Hospital.

About us

The post will have an educational supervisor in Emergency Medicine and an Educational Supervisor in Clinical Toxicology. Funding will be available to enable the post holder to attend relevant course(s).

Applicants must hold full registration with the GMC and currently be an ST3+ in Emergency Medicine in the UK (or international equivalent in the UK recognized by the RCEM).

Person Specification Education/Qualifications
  • Eligible for registration with the GMC
  • MRCEM
  • BSc, BMedSci (or other intercalated degree), other degrees/qualifications
  • ALS/ATLS instructor
  • ED training scheme in UK or international equivalent recognised in the UK by RCEM
  • Additional experience in one or more of other related specialties (GIM, ITU/PICU)
Skills/Knowledge/Ability
  • Experience in performing procedures relevant to emergency medicine
  • Competent to work without supervision
  • Clear, logical thinking showing an analytical/scientific approach
  • Appropriate level of clinical knowledge
  • Shows knowledge of evidence-informed practice
  • Shows awareness of own limitations
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of clinical risk management
  • Understanding of clinical governance
  • Demonstrates breadth of awareness of issues in emergency medicine
  • Interest in undertaking an OOPTE in Clinical Toxicology and developing a specialist interest in Clinical Toxicology as part of ED training
