Job Description
Senior Clinical Research Fellow in IBD (ST4+) (2 posts) St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

An opportunity has arisen to join the Gastroenterology and Hepatology team at St. George's Hospital (London, UK) as a Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The post provides excellent clinical exposure to complex IBD, GI bleeds, and endoscopy. The appointed candidate will work within a team, supported by Foundation Year and Intermediate Medical Trainees. This post would suit a dynamic individual looking to take an OOPE to widen their experience and training in IBD but moreover dedicate a period of time to research with an aim to obtain a higher research degree (MD) based around research projects on the epidemiology of IBD, apply for dedicated grant funding, and share research findings amongst the hepatology community.

The clinical aspects of these posts include weekly IBD clinics and being part of the regional SWL GI bleed rota. The salary is a combination of GI bleed rota and a 50% clinical salary.

Main duties of the job

The intended outcome for the successful candidate will be working to obtain an MD based around research projects on the epidemiology of IBD. The applicant must be within a training program for gastroenterology and must have tertiary level of IBD clinics.

Projects:

  1. Studies into the microbiome in IBD
  2. Review of microplastics as potential cause of IBD
  3. Retrospective epidemiology study on microplastic exposure in IBD
  4. Study into biologic use and surgical intervention rate

Due to the clinical duties of the post, this is only suitable for senior gastroenterology SpRs who are independent for therapeutic upper GI endoscopy (and signed off as such).

Person Specification Qualifications and Training
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP
  • Full GMC Registration
Experience
  • Experience of audit and research methodology
  • ST3+ gastro/hepatology training post or equivalent
  • Independent upper GI endoscopist
  • Experience on GI bleed rota
Skills
  • Computer skills including the ability to manage databases and image processing systems, which generate reliable research and clinical outcome data sets
  • Understand principles of audit
  • Understand principles and able to interpret research results
Knowledge
  • Good medical knowledge and clinical skills
  • Some evidence of involvement in research or presentations at meetings/publications
