Job Description

Job Description:

  1. Lead the HFI for military and defence systems, ensuring compliance with Def Stan 00-251, JSP 912, and other relevant standards.
  2. Apply Human Performance and User-Centred Design (UCD) principles and methodologies to design and enhance defence systems and products.
  3. Apply expertise in military systems and Human Factors to optimise usability, safety, and overall system performance.
  4. Conduct and review Human Factors Analyses, including but not limited to task analysis, workload assessments, usability studies, and safety assessments.
  5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including systems engineers, safety engineers, and project managers, to integrate HFI into the overall systems engineering lifecycle.
  6. Provide technical mentorship to junior Human Factors engineers.
  7. Represent the Human Factors domain at key stakeholder meetings, design reviews, and customer briefings.
  8. Engage with customers and stakeholders to ensure HFI requirements are met.
  9. Contribute to the development of HFI strategies and methodologies for defence projects, including bids and proposals.
  10. Participate in the development of new EW Human Factors capability within the business.

Required Qualifications & Experience (You Really Must Have):

  1. Minimum of a Master's degree in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Psychology, or a related discipline, or equivalent significant professional experience in the field.
  2. Candidates must hold an active Security Clearance (SC) or be eligible to obtain SC clearance.
  3. Experience working in HFI for defence systems, including working directly with defence sector clients or military stakeholders.
  4. In-depth knowledge of Defence Standards such as Def Stan 00-251, JSP 912, and other relevant MOD standards and guidance.
  5. Experience delivering Human Factors solutions within complex military environments, ensuring UCD for high-performance, mission-critical systems.
  6. Extensive experience with Human Factors methodologies such as task analysis, workload assessments, usability studies, and human error identification.
  7. Actively working towards or already holding Chartership with the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF).
  8. Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and manage stakeholders at all levels.
  9. Strong analytical skills with the ability to solve complex technical problems and provide pragmatic solutions.

Desirable Skills (It Would Be Nice If You Had):

  1. Experience working with MOD clients and military stakeholders.
  2. Experience with mentoring and coaching others.
  3. Experience in Human Factors requirements capture.
  4. Experience in the design and evaluation of Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs).
  5. Familiarity with AGILE development methodologies.
  6. Involvement in developing and evaluating of military training systems.
  7. Experience in aerospace projects.
  8. Conducting anthropometric and ergonomic assessments.
  9. Providing Human Factors input into safety cases.
