Job Description

NPL is the UK's National Measurement Institute providing the measurement expertise that underpins UK prosperity and quality of life. From unhackable quantum communications and superfast 5G to antibiotic alternatives and more effective cancer diagnosis/treatments; technological advances must be built on a foundation of reliable measurement to succeed. Building on over a century's worth of expertise, NPL's science, engineering and technology makes this possible.

The Project Management office is looking for an experienced Senior Project Manager to work with our world leading Time and Frequency department.

You will be joining our team at an exciting time - the Time and Frequency department maintain the UK's National Time Scale, UTC (NPL), and are currently developing a new resilient Time Scale facility that will underpin our Critical National Infrastructure. This will address the risks associated with our dependency on global navigation satellite systems (such as GPS) that are vulnerable to both natural and intentional interference.

As a Senior Project Manager, you will be organised, business-savvy and possess great communication skills. You're a natural influencer who's able to manage projects positively. Beyond that, we're looking for people who'll thrive in an environment like ours. At NPL we learn from each other, respect each other, and work together to do better for ourselves and for our customers. While we are always looking to stretch beyond what we know, we don't make things more complicated when there's no need.

We are now working in a hybrid way, with a mix of remote and office working. We strive to offer a great work-life balance, which will depend on the kind of role you do and the part of the business you work in.

Skills you will bring to the role:
  1. A track record of successfully leading and managing R&D or commercial projects for multiple stakeholders across an organisation.
  2. Managing change within projects and communicating to a wide range of stakeholders across the business.
  3. Managing risks and issues within projects and coordinating mitigation actions between stakeholders of all levels.
  4. Project budgeting and forecasting experience.
  5. Reporting to project stakeholders and customers within agreed deadlines.
  6. Experience in demonstrating responsibility for managing expectations of stakeholders and the perception of the project within, and outside of, the organisation.
  7. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present complex information tailored to a specific audience.
  8. Experience in developing and applying project management processes and tools, and a willingness to continually improve.
  9. Security cleared or able to apply is essential for this role.
  10. Ability to travel within the UK.

It will be great if you had:

  1. Demonstrable experience of working within a PMO environment.
  2. Experience in bids and developing and winning projects would be an advantage.
  3. Knowledge of public sector procurement processes would be an advantage.
  4. Experience of contract management.
  5. Proficiency in MS Project.
  6. PRINCE2/APM PMQ project management qualification.

Please note: Applications will be reviewed, and interviews conducted throughout the duration of this advert; therefore, we may at any time bring the closing date forward. We encourage all interested applicants to apply as soon as practical.

We actively recruit citizens of all backgrounds, but the nature of our work in specific departments means that nationality, residency and security requirements can be more tightly defined than others. You will be asked about this throughout the recruitment process. To work at NPL, you will need to obtain BPSS security clearance.
