Job Description
Senior Urban Energy Consultant (Electrical)

Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

As cities respond to climate change, opportunities for new energy infrastructure, such as district heat networks, are emerging. To support the transition of energy networks in urban areas, we help clients to develop the strategy and target required investments that will deliver decarbonisation.

The Opportunity

The Urban Energy + Integrated Energy Systems team in London is recruiting a senior consultant to join our team and support our work developing integrated energy solutions for a more sustainable and resilient future.

We are a multidisciplinary group of engineers, scientists, policy makers and planners. Our projects include strategies, studies and plans from building scale to city scale. We are involved in projects from planning, through design to delivery and operational optimisation.

We work with thinkers and drivers of change, including local, regional and central governments, energy companies, developers, financial institutions, C40 Cities, and others in both the private and public sector. We work across the UK and internationally.

Recent projects include: Low carbon energy masterplans for large development sites in the UK, Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East; Whole energy system decarbonisation strategies and investment plans including numerous Local Area Energy Plans, using in-house energy modelling tools; Urban energy infrastructure schemes, including heating and cooling networks, distributed energy systems, and other smart local energy systems; Electricity supply advice for extra-large load customers with a focus on electrical engineering solutions, investment strategies, and associated energy infrastructure contracts.

As a senior consultant, you will work across a variety of projects in both project management and technical roles, with responsibilities for quality of outputs, client satisfaction and commercial performance. You will guide junior colleagues and participate in business development and work winning. You will be supported by peers and a diverse leadership team offering mentorship and strategic direction.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for the following qualifications, skills and knowledge:

  • Qualification in engineering, physics, or similar, with an electrical engineering focus.
  • Chartered status with a relevant UK professional institution or experience which meets chartership criteria.
  • Appreciation of, or experience in, a consultancy environment.
  • Technical knowledge and experience relevant to the role: energy infrastructure feasibility studies including techno-economic option analysis, large scale energy strategies and masterplanning, decarbonisation option and risk assessments, and/or business case development to support energy infrastructure investment. Prior experience with design, construction and/or operation of high voltage electrical infrastructure (11 - 132kV), and renewable energy and/or energy storage systems would be an advantage.
  • Working knowledge of current climate and energy related standards, policy and legislation (country-specific or global).
  • Strong technical analysis skills to support evidence-based client advisory services.
  • Communication and presentation experience in areas such as stakeholder engagement and workshop delivery, data visualisation, and reports and presentations of technical material for non-technical audiences.
