Job overview

Cellular Pathology is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, self-motivated, and conscientious member of staff who is able to work alone and enjoy working as part of a friendly and professional team, providing an efficient, effective, and comprehensive service.

Suitable candidates must be HCPC registered and take part in the Cellular Pathology management team, assisting other Senior BMSs, Lead BMS, and Head BMS to maintain the UKAS accreditation status the department has achieved.

Main duties of the job
  • Act as deputy to Senior BMS
  • Responsible for the day-to-day workflow management within the section they are rota into, managing break times and work allocation to members of the team.
  • Quality Assurance of any tests leaving the laboratory to ensure they are of a high standard.
  • Participate in training of staff, ensuring training records are updated.
  • Assist in the introduction of new technology or methodologies.
  • Assist in the introduction of quality improvements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues identified during laboratory practices.
  • Participate and ensure that quality processes are adhered to and reported.

Person specification EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist.
  • A Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent.
  • Participation in CPD.
EXPERIENCE
  • Experience of standard diagnostic methods in the relevant pathology discipline.
  • At least two years post-registration experience of working in a diagnostic pathology laboratory in the relevant discipline.
SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE
  • Ability to multitask and supervise a team.
  • Sufficient knowledge to troubleshoot processing issues.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety regulations relating to safe working in pathology laboratories.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.
  • Good manual dexterity & accurate pipetting skills.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality assurance processes.
SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
  • Willingness/ability to travel to other sites.
  • Willingness to work internal rotation.

PPE requirements: Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required in accordance with infection prevention and control procedures.

COVID-19 and Flu vaccinations are encouraged for staff working in healthcare settings.
