We are looking for a Specialist Dietetic Practitioner to jointly lead the metabolic team and support the service from a strategic perspective and to be responsible for dietetic research, clinical expertise, staff training and service development in the area of Inherited Metabolic Diseases.

The post holder should have highly effective communication and negotiation skills and the ability to work efficiently and effectively within teams.

We are a forward-thinking department of over 60 dietitians committed to clinical governance initiatives. You will be actively involved in CPD and department activities.

Main duties of the job

The Charles Dent Metabolic Unit is one of the largest and longest established services in the world for the treatment of adolescents and adults with Inherited Metabolic Diseases. We are seeking a dynamic, flexible and innovative dietitian, with a significant amount of clinical dietetic experience, including previous experience in metabolic dietetics.

Please note this is an Annex 21 position - refer to the attached competencies for Annex 21.

Pay arrangements

More than 1 year but less than 2 years before completion of training 70% of top of Band 8a. 70% = £42,352.80 Basic plus £8,172 HCA Allowance.

Up to 12 months before completion of training 75% of top of Band 8a. 75% = £45,378 Basic plus £8,172 HCA Allowance.

After completion of training, subject to meeting the competencies outlined in the attached document, the post-holder will move to entry level Band 8a.

Person Specification Knowledge and Qualifications
  • Four year degree in Nutrition & Dietetics or equivalent
  • HCPC registered
  • Leadership or management courses / training
  • Extensive post graduate training to include Inborn Metabolic Disorders training and education e.g. Paediatric Module 4: Inherited Metabolic Disorders
  • Member of British Dietetic Association (BDA) or equivalent
Experience
  • Lead role and / or active participation in academic, professional or regional working group for Inherited Metabolic Disorders (e.g. British Inherited Metabolic Disease Group)
  • In-depth knowledge of the complete metabolic care pathway to include the impact and implications of multi-disciplinary interventions
  • Partnership working across organisational boundaries
Skills and Abilities
  • Experience of conducting research and / or audit, including ability to analyse and interpret statistics
  • Proficient IT skills, including Microsoft Office and nutritional analysis packages
  • Ability to critically evaluate current research
  • Ability to influence at a strategic level
  • Extensive lecturing / teaching experience to all health professionals, including senior medical staff on degree (or higher level) / professional course
  • Ability to plan, develop, implement and evaluate innovative projects
  • Change management and facilitation skills
Communication
  • Advanced verbal & written communication skills
  • Proven ability to communicate using a variety of methods to a range of individuals
  • Advanced clinical reasoning skills and able to make complex clinical judgements
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills, including assertiveness and the ability to negotiate at all levels within the MDT and with colleagues in other organisations
  • Advanced problem solving skills, including the ability to resolve conflict and handle difficult situations effectively
  • Motivational interviewing / behaviour change / advanced communication skills and/or counselling training

  • Ability to reflect / question / evaluate own practice (evidence of CPD)
  • Line management requirements; experience of managing individuals including appraisal, recruitment and retention
  • Mentoring, facilitating and / or clinical supervision of other members of the MDT
