Job Description

Job Summary

You will work as a member of the multi-professional palliative care team, providing clinical care for patients with palliative care needs in the hospice and community setting. The role will involve education and supervision of members of the team to develop others Palliative medicine skills.

This will provide experience for doctors who wish to develop their knowledge, skills and competencies in specialist palliative care.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Provision of clinical care and supervision as part of the multi professional team for patients requiring specialist palliative care across all hospice clinical departments. This post is clinically supported and supervised by the Consultant team.
  2. Admission of patients and accurate medicine reconciliation.
  3. Maintain detailed, accurate and comprehensive medical records.
  4. Participation in non resident medical on-call rota ensuring that the provision of specialist advice is available out of hours. 1 in 6.
  5. Active involvement in clinical effectiveness activities, risk management and regular audit of clinical care.
  6. Ensuring that knowledge and skills in palliative medicine are kept up to date to progress in the specialty doctor role.
  7. Liaison with allied professional groups including General Practitioners, Hospital Consultants, Community Nurses and Allied Health professionals regarding patient assessment and care planning.
  8. Working with colleagues to provide a high quality service to the patients, carers, families and the wider community of Ayrshire.

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications

  1. Full GMC Registration with a license to practice - Essential
  2. Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practice from, the GMC at the advertised post start date for the vacancy - Essential
  3. Post graduate membership e.g. MRCP, MRCGP - Desirable
  4. Attendance at education course - Desirable
  5. Post graduate qualification (e.g. PGcert, PG dip or MSc) in education or palliative care or other relevant - Desirable
  6. Communication skills course - Desirable

Knowledge/Experience

  1. Completion of foundation training - Essential
  2. Two years (full time equivalent) Palliative medicine experience beyond foundation experience - Essential
  3. Experience of patient with malignant and non-malignant disease and management of emergencies - Essential
  4. Experience of Multidisciplinary Team working - Essential
  5. Experience of managing patients in all settings (inpatient, community and outpatient) - Desirable

Ability/Skills

  1. Ability to prioritise workload, delegate responsibility and supervise staff - Essential
  2. Ability to take responsibility, show leadership and make decisions - Essential
  3. Able to work well with multidisciplinary team and know when to escalate to seniors - Essential
  4. Experience of future care planning conversations - Essential
  5. Knowledge and experience of IT governance - Essential
  6. Experience of change management with QI - Desirable
  7. Experience of undergraduate teaching - Desirable
  8. Ability to apply evidence to practice - Desirable
  9. Research experience and appreciation of ethical issues - Desirable
