Specialty Doctor in Paediatrics

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a specialty doctor to join our established medical team within the Women's and Children centre based at The Princess Royal Hospital. This post will be for a 12 month fixed term position, covering Maternity Leave. The post would attract 10 PAs with a review of plan taking place 3-6 months after appointment, with the opportunity of working additional PA's. Our vision is for the highest quality care, to provide an environment in which all staff, and in particular trainees, are supported and thrive, with greater delivery of care by Consultants in line with RCPCH recommendations.
Main duties of the job- To provide speciality doctor / Tier 2 support cover to acute General Paediatrics including wards, assessment unit and A&E across sites at Princess Royal hospital and Royal Shrewsbury hospital.
- To provide support to General Paediatric Outpatient Clinics, reviewing new and follow-up patients.
- General ward duties, including patient reviews and day to day assistance with management of the ward.
- Provision of opinion and support as required by the A&E department.
- To participate in tier 2 rota commitments including weekdays/weekends and nights as per rostered duties and supporting paediatric department and A&E across sites.
- To develop enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment, management of acutely ill patients and chronic patients.
- To contribute towards safeguarding children and providing timely assessments with supervision from consultants.
- To have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional attitude to work well in a multi-professional team.
- To deliver clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
- To follow patients throughout their clinical pathways.
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is the main provider of acute hospital services for around half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales.
Job responsibilitiesA formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues, on behalf of the Medical Director within 3 months of starting in post. A full-time job plan is based on a 10 PA working week for the role. The job plan will be reviewed annually and is a prospective agreement that sets out the specialty doctors duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of a specialty doctors professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external and will include personal objectives, detailing links to wider service improvements and trust strategic priorities. For a full-time contract, the job plan will be divided on average per week (pro-rata for a part time post) as: In a 10 PA job plan, the post holder would have about 9 PAs of Direct Clinical Care - includes clinical activity, clinically related activity and predictable and unpredictable emergency work. Up to 1.0 PAs Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) - includes CPD, audit, teaching and research. The allocation of PAs is reviewed and may be subject to adjustment when a further diary exercise is undertaken or if the service demands a review of the team job plan.
Person Specification Qualifications- MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
- APLS (or equivalent)
- NLS
- Safeguarding appropriate to role
- Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Have completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time basis), in paediatrics, or as a fixed term specialty trainee (or equivalent) or have equivalent experience and competencies.
- Able to conduct practical procedures required of the post
- Experienced in making clinical decision independently and managing clinical risk.
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
