Specialty Doctor in Robotic Colorectal Surgery with an interest in IBD

We are looking for a senior trainee or post CCT specialty surgeon to join our colorectal department for 6-12 months. The post is ideal for individuals who want to develop robotic surgery skills for cancer resection and those interested in gaining subspecialist experience in inflammatory bowel disease, prior to undertaking a consultant post. There are 5 colorectal surgeons currently performing robotic surgery, of which, 3 are proctors. We perform 40-50 IBD resections. There is a weekly IBD MDT and fortnightly surgical IBD clinics to help deliver high quality care for patients. The post holder will gain experience in complex luminal and peri-anal Crohn's disease, ileoanal pouch surgery and robotic techniques in inflammatory bowel disease.
The applicant is expected to attend regular theatre sessions, including the robotic colorectal training program at UHCW (at least one robotic list per week), play an active role in subspeciality MDTs (IBD, intestinal failure) and support peri-operative care of patients.
The successful candidate will be encouraged to publish and present at local and international meetings. There will be opportunity to gain observership experience at European centres depending on availability and interest. There will be preferential access to robotic simulator training modules and modular hands-on training for both benign and malignant conditions.
Main duties of the jobAs part of our commitment to patients and delivery of a world class service for all, you are expected, where identified, to attend and complete relevant training and development opportunities to support this. This may include Lean for Leaders, Advanced Lean Training, and the Human Factors Programme, amongst others. Full attendance and completion of identified courses is considered essential and a prerequisite for this post.
Job ResponsibilitiesMain Duties/ Responsibilities
- Day to day care of inpatients.
- Be part of the acute General Surgical On-call, commensurate with experience.
- Support in theatre for complex IBD surgery.
- Independently operate to support day surgery services.
- Attend MDTs regularly.
- Support outpatient activity of the unit (independent clinic).
- Perform audit of overall activity of the unit.
- Be able to do Consultant on call (under supervision) if required to cover sickness.
- Undertake two independent TWW clinics per week.
- Undertake 1 sub-specialist colorectal clinic per week.
- Undertake half a day surgery/Rugby St Cross list per month.
On call and emergency care: The post holder will be part of 1:18 on call rota for emergency surgery and trauma care. UHCW is a level 1 trauma centre with tertiary referrals in emergency upper GI and HPB surgery from neighbouring hospitals.
Education and Research
We encourage the post holder to acquire broad experience of colorectal surgery. Participation in local research activities will be encouraged which include NIHR portfolio trials and if interested, there is opportunity to lead on clinical research projects in robotic surgery.
Teaching
UHCW is a teaching hospital affiliated with Warwick Medical School. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the teaching of medical students as well as junior medical and non-medical staff as part of their role.
