Job overview An exciting and challenging opportunity has become available for a Band 5 Staff Nurse within the Pre-op Assessment Department.
The post holder will be responsible for ensuring immediate care to the relevant patient group and will work within the pre-operative assessment and admission service. We are a busy department assessing all patients undergoing surgery, many with multiple co-morbidities. You will work closely with a wide MDT, including other hospitals and GP services to ensure a smooth, safe and positive journey for all our patients. We also support weekly Anaesthetic clinics, for complex patient assessment and planning.
You will be able to provide initial direct patient care. You will be expected to manage your own caseload of patients and will work within a 'buddy' system with a senior colleague to ensure patients are fully optimized and fit for surgery, whilst high standards of quality of care are delivered and maintained. You will work autonomously and be a team player who works flexibly in order to deliver the highest quality care to our patients. You will be enthusiastic, innovative with excellent communications skills along with a willingness to contribute to the improvement and development of services within pre-op. We provide this service Monday to Sunday which also includes late night clinics.
An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for both Adults and Children is required for this post.

- To participate in the teaching of student nurses and the in-service training of qualified nurses and health care assistants, and to participate in the induction of new starters.
- To display a consistently professional manner, and to be always caring and approachable.
- To commence and participate in research/special projects/audit as directed by the team lead.
- To contribute to the setting, maintaining and monitoring of pre-operative assessment modernisation standards within the unit.
- To have responsibility for the security and maintenance of equipment belonging to the unit.
- To communicate clearly, effectively and politely with all levels of the multi-disciplinary team, patients, relatives and other departments.
- To be aware of and adhere to all Trust Policies and Procedures at all times.
- To report and record any untoward incidences via Datix system.
- To assist in the admission process, including obtaining results of investigations and any action required to theatre utilisation in accordance with protocols - promote full.
- To demonstrate awareness of Infection control policies and procedures.
- To ensure that privacy and dignity of patients is paramount and is not compromised.

- Previous experience within a surgical care setting.

- ECG Awareness - Performing ECG's.
- Team Player.
- Ability to communicate with all members of MDT.
- Ability to use own initiative.
