Job overview

Our busy CYP Daycare and Outpatients sees over 6000 patients a year, requiring systemic anti-cancer therapy, radiotherapy, and supportive care, delivered by our team. The age range of our patients is 1 to 24 years old, making CYPDU a very unique unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital. Are you willing to gain experience in areas of cancer care delivery and SACT administration? If so, we want to hear from you!

We are looking for candidates who have the drive and passion to bring ideas forward and lead projects to improve the patient journey through the service. A qualification in oncology or specialty is essential for a Band 6, and we want to support you in this journey. The candidate will be expected to take an active role in unit leadership, managing the service in line with trust values and improvements. The successful candidate will have exceptional communication skills and demonstrate consistent positive role modeling to support the development of both the team and our pre and post-registration placements.

Main duties of the job
  • To carry out nursing care for patients as drawn up in conjunction with the co-ordinator of the shift.
  • To develop an awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the different treatment modalities.
  • As an integral member of the nursing team, work with team members to ensure the maintenance of an efficient, safe, clean, and pleasant environment for all patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • To complete the first level assessment of the patient's needs to gain an understanding of the physiological, psycho-social, spiritual, and cultural needs of patients with cancer and their families.
  • To assist with teaching patients in preparation for investigations, treatment, and home care.
  • To be aware of the side effects of any treatment in progress and adopt a problem-solving approach to minimize potentially adverse reactions.
  • To be involved in the direct delivery of skilled specialized nursing care with supervision until competent, e.g., wound dressings, removal of drains, and insertion of urinary catheters.
  • To develop an awareness of the protocols involved for patients undergoing clinical trials.
Person specification Education
  • NMC Registration
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • RMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointment
  • Qualification in oncology or specialty
  • Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
  • Recognized teaching qualification
Experience
  • Experience in intravenous drug administration
  • Sufficient post-registration nursing experience in oncology or specialty to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job
  • Experience in chemotherapy administration
  • Experience in Clinical Management
  • Evidence of relevant teaching experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management
Skills
  • Experience in oncology or area of specialty
  • Venepuncture and/or cannulation skills
  • Computer Literacy (e.g., use of Microsoft Word and Outlook)
