The Opportunity

This is a position for an Economist within Arup's Economics and Strategy team based in London. The team sits within the Business and Investor Advisory group. Typical projects undertaken within the Business and Investor Advisory group include providing commercial, technical, economic, and financial advice to financial investors, energy companies, governments, developers, and international finance institutions in the infrastructure space, specifically in the energy/utility and transportation sectors. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality economic, strategy, and policy advice to our clients across a range of energy projects (e.g., electricity, gas, hydrogen, and emerging technologies), transport (e.g., electric vehicle charging), water, and the built environment. Candidates should have commercial/economic or regulatory/policy experience within one or more of the above fields.

Is this role right for you?

The primary responsibilities of the post include undertaking economic and financial analysis and providing commercial or policy advice. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering projects to a range of public and private sector clients. This will include undertaking economic and market analysis and providing commercial and strategic advice. You will also be responsible for preparing proposals and supporting the delivery of project work, including authoring high-quality reports and verbal presentations.

Projects may range from desk-based research studies, market assessment, asset evaluation, policy and regulatory advice, business case development, economic appraisal, and policy design. Project work will require a range of quantitative skills from handling, analyzing, and presenting data to financial/economic analysis. Alongside this, the candidate should be able to think critically and distill and communicate complex problems to clients simply. Arup is a multidisciplinary consultancy, and whilst you will have specific experience in one or more of the above sectors, you will have the freedom to work with experts from a range of disciplines.

Requirements:

  • Specific experience in the infrastructure sector is highly desirable - this could be in electricity, gas, hydrogen, transport, or water, or related sectors.
  • Foundations in economics or carrying out economic/commercial analysis are required. A key part of the role will be to critically assess information and carry out analysis, using this assessment to provide high-quality advice to clients.
  • Experience in developing policy and/or providing commercial advice is desirable.
  • Preferably a degree in Economics or a closely related discipline.
  • A background in economic or numerical analysis and providing advice to public or private organizations based on this. Prior experience in consulting is desirable but not essential.
