Sustainability & Regulatory Affairs Manager

We are looking for an experienced sustainability professional to join us as our new Sustainability & Regulatory Affairs Manager. Reporting to the Director of Sustainability, this role will be responsible for ensuring that OUP is aware of, and adequately responds to, all UK, EU, and global legislation / regulations relating to the environment, manufacturing supply chain, and product safety. The main areas of responsibilities of this role will include:
- Engage stakeholders within Operations and the wider publishing organization to ensure understanding and ownership of regulatory compliance obligations, and implementation of effective compliance actions.
- Drive and oversee OUP's approach to managing restricted substances in the supply chain, in close collaboration with manufacturing teams.
- Collate and manage environmental data for internal and external reporting purposes.
- Act as risk champion for Operations, and support audit and assurance processes relating to sustainability and regulatory compliance.
This is a global role that works closely with core and branch Operations teams including manufacturing and supply chain, legal, risk and assurance, as well as manufacturing suppliers and third-party advisors.
We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:
- Proven track record of experience in regulatory compliance, either managing compliance for a large organization or advising organizations in a consultancy capacity, ideally with a focus on operations / product safety / sustainability.
- Knowledge of current and anticipated policy and legislation relating to the environment, restricted substances, and product safety, and how this can apply to organizations and projects.
- Ability to understand and analyse complex legislation, with excellent attention to detail.
- Strong communicator with experience of engaging stakeholders at all levels of an organization, including senior management, and capable of summarizing complex topics for a lay audience.
- Experience of working cross-functionally / in a matrix, ideally as part of an Operations team.
- Experience of project management and chairing meetings.
- Experience of corporate reporting (annual / sustainability reports).
- Good working knowledge of EU legislation including the EU Deforestation Regulation, Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, Global Product Safety Directive, and Reach.
- Experience of working in publishing, a sector with an outsourced supply chain (e.g. consumer goods, fashion, retail), or manufacturing.
