Specialism: Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)

Contract Type: Full-time, term time only (opportunity to become permanent)

Start date: ASAP

Do you have a passion for supporting young people from vulnerable backgrounds? Are you seeking a rewarding and challenging role that allows you to make a real difference in the lives of others? If so, this is the perfect opportunity for you!

Long-Term Teachers supports a dynamic and innovative special school in Newton Abbot, seeking a committed Behavioural Teaching Assistant to join their team. The school caters for students aged 5 to 16, across 2 sites, and you will have the opportunity to work across both.

In this role, you will support the wellbeing and development of students with social, emotional and mental health challenges. These young people may come from diverse and sometimes traumatic backgrounds, and many may also have ADHD or autism. Therefore, it is essential that you are confident in managing challenging behaviour.

Regardless of their circumstances, the school adopts a therapeutic approach, focusing on building meaningful relationships to create a safe, nurturing environment for students to thrive. This approach has led to excellent attendance and successful outcomes.

As a behavioural teaching assistant, you will:

  • Nurture and inspire students both inside and outside the classroom

  • Provide support to a small group of students or work on a 1:1 basis, depending on the need

  • Assist the classroom teacher in helping students engage in their learning

The ideal candidate will be positive, empathetic, enthusiastic, and resilient, with a genuine desire to support young people. Experience or knowledge of SEMH is highly desirable.

This is a full time position, working Monday to Friday, 08:30 - 15:30, term time only. If you prove to be a valuable asset to the school, there may be the opportunity to make this position permanent.
