Barts Health NHS Trust Whipps Cross Older People Services

Consultant Ortho Geriatrician

Whipps Cross University Hospital, part of the Barts Health NHS Trust Group is looking for 12full time Substantive Consultant Geriatricians, to join our Older People's Services (OPS) team based predominantly on the Whipps Cross Hospital site.

The post offers an exciting opportunity to join a growing team and to develop new models of working and services that support all older people attending the hospital and within the local community.

The posts offer an new opportunity to participate in changing the management of patients with fractured neck of femur and other fragility fractures in North East London. The Orthopaedic strategy within Barts Health is to concentrate fractured neck of femur management at Whipps Cross Hospital leading to an expansion in the workforce required to care for these patients. It is envisaged that one of these post holder/s would be working closely with other clinicians (from Orthopaedics and Anaesthetics) as well as the Multidisciplinary Team.

This post forms part of the redevelopment of Geriatric Medicine at Whipps Cross Hospital and gives the post-holders a unique opportunity to participate in the redevelopment of the Hospital itself as well as the services we provide.

Job responsibilities

General responsibilitiesThe appointee will be expected to cover the following main areas of work.

To have and maintain full registration with a license to practice from the General

Medical Council. Medical Staff are advised to continue membership of one of themedical defence organisations

To always have regard to the clinical and quality standards set out within Trustguidelines, to participate in clinical governance working closely with otherprofessionals to provide comprehensive care of Elderly patients in and out ofhospital. This will include liaison with general practice and community services aboutmanagement of patient with chronic conditions.

Daily attendance of the ward multidisciplinary board round to review flow anddischarge planning.

The appointee will be expected to participate fully as a leader and member of themulti-disciplinary team.

Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Trust to develop a service model inkeeping with best practice.

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, including alladministrative duties associated with patient care.

Leadership, development, and organisation of the services in their charge in line withthe Trust business plans. Liaison and communication with the Lead Clinician for

Older People Services and the General Manager and Clinical Director OlderPeople

Development of his/her own interests within the specialty.Supervise junior

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration with license to practice
  • Evidence of participation in research (peer reviewed publications etc.)
Experience
  • Higher specialist training in Geriatrics and G(I)Medicine
  • Broad experience in Geriatrics and G(I)M
  • Current ALS certificate
  • Ability to organise and deliver a teaching programme
  • Experience in Service Development
Knowledge
  • Detailed knowledge of Geriatrics and G(I)M and of the specialist skills required for this post
  • Knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit and demonstrable commitment to improving quality of care to patients
  • Understanding of modern medical curricula and commitment to lifelong learning
