Job Description
Consultant Ophthalmologist interest in Cornea

This is an opportunity to join a dynamic, progressive team with a multidisciplinary approach to cornea and emergency eyecare management, including outpatient clinics, optometry and nurse practitioner clinics, and community and hospital-based working.

We provide a comprehensive service within secondary care, serving a population of 670,000. A range of advanced cornea surgical procedures are offered, including DMEK, DALK, PKP, corneal cross linking, special lens insertions like Toric, Artisan, Scleral fixated, piggy back lenses, nurse led keratoconus service, specialist contact lens fitting etc.

The successful candidate will provide medical and surgical management within cornea and will work in partnership with an enthusiastic Ophthalmology department and wider multidisciplinary team to deliver the emergency eye care aspect of the post. Our existing consultants have sub-specialty interests in medical retina, uveitis, glaucoma, anterior segment, oculoplastics, paediatric ophthalmology, and strabismus. The department also benefits from an ECLO, and supportive senior management.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide Cornea complex outpatient clinics along with specialist surgical management.
  • To clinically support and train a multidisciplinary team including trainees, associate specialists, optometrists, and nurse practitioners.
  • Provide leadership and innovation in service delivery.

  • A consultant with cornea and emergency eye care subspecialty interest
  • An individual passionate about improving the quality of ophthalmology services
  • Willingness to train junior and multidisciplinary colleagues

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:

  • To ensure the provision of a first class clinical service
  • To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  • To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Health Board's procedures and operating policies
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Division's and Health Board's service plans
  • To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Medical Division or the Health Board

Job responsibilities

This position involves Regulated Activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:

Applicants must hold full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC.

Candidates for Consultant posts must also be on the GMC Specialist Register (including via CESR/European Community Rights) or will have a CCT/CESR (CP) date within 6 months of interview.
