Oxford Health is looking for a 1 WTE consultant psychiatrist, who is an experienced and dynamic medical professional, to provide clinical leadership to the Adult Community Mental Health team in Witney. This post has become available as a result of an internal move.

Main duties of the job

With the changing circumstances of modern mental healthcare, the ability to adapt and demonstrate new ways of working is essential. You will have experience of working in General Adult Psychiatry and have great interpersonal skills working with colleagues to work collaboratively with our team managers, and to provide leadership and clinical expertise to our highly skilled and committed multidisciplinary teams.

The Consultant will provide senior medical input and clinical leadership to the community mental health team. The post holder will have responsibility for those patients seen by himself/herself, together with those patients seen by medical staff directly supervised by the post holder.

The post holder will assess new routine, urgent and emergency referrals from other agencies alongside other clinicians, provide consultation to non-medical clinicians and offer ongoing management for patients requiring longer term care.

Job responsibilities
  1. Provide senior medical input and clinical leadership to AMHT, ensuring responsibility for patients seen by the post holder and those supervised by them.
  2. Work alongside the team manager, service manager and other Consultant Psychiatrists to ensure effective functioning and development of the service.
  3. Provide direct clinical supervision and line management to trainees and specialty doctors, ensuring daily supervision is available.
  4. Provide direct clinical care and ensure medical involvement in the CPA process and multidisciplinary ward rounds.
  5. Contribute to referral management with the team manager and leadership team.
  6. Undertake MHA assessments and maintain responsibility for patients as required.
  7. Fulfill requirements for Mental Health Act work, including report preparation for Tribunals and Managers meetings.
  8. Provide timely written correspondence to relevant professionals.
  9. Work collaboratively with other agencies and teams.
  10. Contribute to developing and delivering improved clinical services.
  11. Provide Consultant cross-cover for other Consultants within the team.
  12. Participate in the Oxfordshire Adult on-call consultant Rota.
  13. Participate in a no Fixed Abode rota for newly presented patients.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, or equivalent qualification.
  • Eligibility for Section 12 (Mental Health Act) Approval.
  • Approved Clinician status or Eligibility.
  • Higher degree or equivalent in relevant field of medical, psychology, or other studies.
Training
  • Higher specialist training in psychiatry for a minimum of three years, or equivalent training/previous consultant experience.
  • CCT in Psychiatry or inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register.
  • Sub-speciality or other specialist clinical training relevant to the post.
Clinical Experience
  • Experience of the full range of clinical responsibilities expected of a consultant in this specialty.
  • Experience of close collaborative work with social care and other agencies.
  • Application of evidence-based practice and interest in clinical and policy developments.
  • Development of close collaboration with primary care services.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Ability to work within a collaborative multidisciplinary framework.
  • Commitment to active clinical governance and effective team working.
  • Good communication skills with patients, relatives, and colleagues.
  • Experience in supervising and teaching core psychiatric trainees.
  • Research experience and skills.
GMC
  • Full GMC registration.
  • Meets specifications set out in GMC guidance.
  • Specialist Register.
Transport
  • Mobility as required by the post.
  • Valid driver's license and own vehicle.
