At GSK, we are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to develop new therapies and personalized drugs that drive better outcomes for patients at reduced cost with fewer side effects. Because the datasets we use and algorithms we build at each step of the drug development journey have safety and ethical implications for our patients, GSK has a dedicated team working on the responsible use of AI in healthcare. If this excites you, we would love to chat.

As we are growing our team, we're looking for an outstanding leader to develop our vision and strategy, manage and grow our engineers, and drive technical research.

This is a director level role with high visibility and growth potential. We are looking for an ML researcher or engineer with a track record of responsible AI research and significant leadership experience. Competitive candidates have an in-depth knowledge of modern ML methods and experience of applying them in a translational setting. Prior work with real-world, biomedical data is a plus, but not required outside of a willingness to learn. Equally important will be excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to represent and transmit the values and principles of our team.

The Responsible AI team is built on the principles of ownership, accountability, continuous development, and collaboration. We hire for the long term, and we are motivated to make this a great place to work. Our leaders will be committed to your career and development from day one. We strongly encourage applications from people with diverse and underrepresented backgrounds and perspectives.

In this role you will:

  • Lead a diverse team of AI/ML engineers who support teams across AIML and GSK to turn applied AI research into reliable and safe ML pipelines and software products.
  • Drive technical ML research and establish GSK as an excellent place to do responsible AI research.
  • Manage complex, multi-quarter, cross-functional projects.
  • Represent AIML in cross-functional projects or working groups with little to no oversight, representing both technical excellence and the organization's interests.
  • Operationalize GSK's responsible AI strategy by scaling the work of our team across a growing organization and enterprise needs.
  • Be a standard bearer for research and software engineering best practices within the organization.
  • Engage and manage internal and external RAI stakeholders.
  • Operate in a transparent way, communicating clearly and accurately to leadership and the broader organization.
  • Develop a high-performing team where people can thrive through coaching, feedback and ensuring opportunities for growth, including managing managers and developing senior team members.

Why you?

Qualifications & Skills:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • A PhD in a quantitative or engineering discipline (e.g., computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, engineering, among others); OR equivalent work experience as a professional ML engineer or data scientist.
  • A strong track record as an independent ML researcher, preferably in a field related to responsible AI.
  • Demonstrated advanced programming expertise in Python and in developing and delivering robust software solutions.
  • 2+ years experience in a technical lead or engineering manager role with direct reports.
  • 5+ years experience of ML research and/or software development practices: code standards, code review, version control, CI/CD, testing, documentation, Agile, with the ability to mentor others in these practices.
  • Keenness to learn fast in a new domain and to continuously develop your ML and software engineering skills.
  • Proactive communication and problem-solving, and a proven ability to collaborate with colleagues of various backgrounds and levels of seniority.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • A track record of developing leaders.
  • Experience building and evaluating large language models (LLMs) and LLM-based applications.
  • Experience working with biomedical data (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, electronic health records, clinical images).
  • Experience shipping large scale ML applications.
  • A background or interest in drug discovery, biology, medicine or ethics.
