Job Description

As an experienced and autonomous Clinical Perfusionist, you will play a pivotal role in delivering a high-quality clinical perfusion service.

This dynamic and challenging role involves critical procedures such as cardiopulmonary bypass, cell salvage, and intra-aortic balloon pump systems. You will be responsible for ensuring that patients undergoing complex cardiac surgeries receive the highest standard of care. Your expertise and decision-making skills will be vital in managing the perfusion process during surgeries, maintaining patient stability, and contributing to successful surgical outcomes.

You will be joining a team of dedicated healthcare professionals who are passionate about making a difference in patients' lives. In addition to your clinical duties, you will have opportunities to engage in research, contribute to the development of new protocols and procedures, and participate in the education and training of the next generation of perfusionists. Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute a broad range of routine adult clinical perfusion techniques and procedures with high competence.
  • Maintain standards and quality in perfusion services.
  • Educate and train trainee perfusionists and other staff.
  • Foster strong working relationships with the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Participate in the 24/7 on-call perfusion service within the Trust.

General Responsibilities:

Clinical Practice:

  • Adhere to the Code and Standards of Practice by the Society of Clinical Perfusionists of Great Britain and Ireland.
  • Deliver specialised perfusion services, including cardiopulmonary bypass and intra-aortic balloon pump procedures.
  • Demonstrate expert skills and knowledge in adult clinical practice, supervising and training others.
  • Set up and run bypass equipment for adult cardiac surgery, ensuring quality control and safe use of complex medical equipment.
  • Assess patients, make clinical decisions for various cardiac procedures, and administer necessary drugs.
  • Maintain accurate perfusion records and ensure a safe work environment.

Quality and Service Development:

  • Update and develop departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Contribute to perfusion-related service development projects.
  • Work cooperatively with other Trust services to optimize clinical outcomes.
  • Maintain effective communication systems across the Directorate and Trust.

Policy and Service Development:

  • Deliver perfusion team objectives and manage service issues.
  • Investigate complaints and incidents, and support staff in implementing team objectives and projects.
  • Develop specialised care protocols to improve patient care.

Financial and Equipment Resources:

  • Participate in procuring perfusion equipment, managing budgetary responsibilities.
  • Ensure all equipment is safe, maintained, and properly recorded.

Information Resources:

  • Collect clinical data accurately using appropriate software.
  • Support the Chief Perfusionist in monitoring data and making recommendations.

Human Resources:

  • Mentor and supervise trainee staff, support recruitment, and promote reflective practice.
  • Facilitate problem-solving skills and training for staff.
  • Provide training to other staff groups and students.

Audit and Research:

  • Participate in clinical effectiveness activities and maintain high clinical standards.
  • Assist in meeting clinical governance targets and contribute to research opportunities.
  • Present research to the wider perfusion community.

Freedom to Act:

  • Implement national and local policies relevant to the clinical area.
  • Manage complex cases independently, evaluate service delivery, and work within professional boundaries.
