About Network Rail

Network Rail High Speed Ltd. (NRHS) is responsible for operating and maintaining the UK's only international high-speed railway, High Speed (HS1). The 109km HS1 infrastructure consists of a diverse range of railway assets such as the track, signalling, overhead line, lineside buildings, depots, viaducts and long tunnels. NRHS is also responsible for operating and maintaining three international stations; St Pancras, Stratford and Ebbsfleet International.

As a wholly owned subsidiary of Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd, NRHS is privately financed under an agreement with our client HS1 Ltd, undertaking a diverse range of activities from railway infrastructure maintenance and operations - through to station facilities management and retail on behalf of our client.

Brief Description

The role

We have an exciting opportunity within Network Rail High Speed for a Finance Director to provide the necessary expertise, guidance and challenges to the Managing Director and the management team - for the financial and commercial control of all business activities.

You will lead and motivate the finance, contract, and procurement teams to achieve world class levels of business partnering. You will direct the high speed route in all aspects of financial control, planning & management and business analysis, to comply with corporate financial standards and policies. You will also work with the High Speed Managing Director to deliver the efficiency targets required for our High Speed route.

Key accountabilities include:

  • As business partner to the High Speed Managing Director, you will provide strategic direction to the function in order to drive business improvement and efficiency. You will be the primary interface with regulator for future route based regulation.
  • Leading the routes strategic business planning process, delivering a plan which is aligned to the High Speed strategic business plan and meets its outputs whilst delivering outputs defined by route agreements.
  • Leading and motivating the teams so as to provide a high class service to the business.
  • Driving innovation and commercial acumen with the route business to exploit opportunities to increase performance and FPM.
  • Providing direction and support to the Route C&P Manager in satisfying supply chain demand within the performance, financial and geographic boundaries of the High Speed route.
  • Leading the High Speed route investment process and providing financial input so that the right business decision is reached for the asset.
  • Carrying out rigorous business case appraisal for investment decisions, challenging risks, opportunities and contracting strategies.

The person

So, who are we looking for? If you can answer yes to the following questions, then we look forward to receiving your application.

Do you have:

  • Full membership of relevant professional body with demonstrable relevant post qualification experience?
  • Strong leadership with proven success in the business planning process that requires extensive stakeholder communication and relationship management, including supplier and client management?
  • Proven success in building and leading high performing teams on major initiatives including capital development programmes?
  • Experience working within a regulated environment or with an interface to government, or government owned bodies, with statutory and regulatory reporting experience?
  • Experience within at least 2 different finance disciplines within Network Rail and/or external organisations?
  • Relevant experience in procurement, negotiation and the commercial management of suppliers?
  • Strong commercial focus and experience of developing commercial strategies?
