As we expand in the UK and Globally, we're looking for an innovative Head of Market Risk. This is a key leadership role within our Energy Markets team and the scope will cover all of Octopus' current and future international supply businesses.
We have ambitious growth plans and look to the Risk team, working closely with our international businesses, to agree appropriate trading approaches ensuring risk is understood and managed as conditions evolve. The ideal candidate will be creative, acting as a facilitator rather than looking to police positions. At Octopus, we hire great people who can move quickly across a complex business. Being able to thrive in a fast-paced environment is super important for this role.
You will be directly supported by a small but very talented team. And within the wider team you will work with a number of developers, engineers and analysts to build and improve tools.
Some international travel will be required.
What you'll do
- Work with our supply entities in all countries to understand market conditions and agree appropriate risk approaches
- Write and develop Group and country specific Market Risk Policies, consulting local traders and management
- Design analysis and visualisations that collate country specific risk positions into a single, clear Group view, with delivery supported by the engineering team
- Pull together Group view on weather risk and look to originate and execute positions to manage this risk
- Work closely with local trading management to originate appropriate wholesale deals
- Think about how asset and consumer flexibility can be used as risk management tools
- Generate explanatory materials for a range of senior stakeholders, up to and including Octopus Energy Group board
- Scope covers market risk generated by wholesale gas, power and certificates
- Strong numerical ability and understanding of risk
- Energy market experience beneficial but not essential
- Similarly, basic Python knowledge will be beneficial but not vital
- The ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple projects
- Interpersonal skills that enable you to effectively form trusted relationships with business unit management teams but at the same time retain an ability to challenge with empathy and understanding. Excellent communication and listening skills will be core to this
