Resident Assistant (m/f/d)

New York University (NYU) Berlin is seeking a full-time live-in Resident Assistant within NYU Berlin's Student Residence in Berlin, Kreuzberg.

POSITION SUMMARY

This is a full-time live-in position. The Resident Assistant will live in NYU Berlin's Student Residence in Berlin, Kreuzberg, in a modern, spacious, fully furnished single apartment. This position encompasses a broad range of responsibilities and offers an opportunity to sharpen various organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills within a short period of time. The Resident Assistant's primary role is to monitor and promote the well-being of the students and support a sense of community. The Resident Assistant serves as a source of expertise on the local socio-cultural context. They organize events that promote a sense of community and belonging among the students. Their portfolio of tasks also includes administrative work related to residential life, extra-curricular programming, including orientation, learning journeys, events, etc. This is a 1-2 years fixed term role, depending on the availability of the finalist.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

General Administration (45%)

  • Act as a role model and first point of contact for students, providing logistical guidance and support.
  • Communicate housing policies to students and ensure that these policies are observed; enforce appropriate disciplinary responses, if necessary.
  • Assist in the facilitation of roommate and suitemate conflicts.
  • Act as a liaison between facility management, security personnel, and students.
  • Organize check-ins, check-outs, and housing orientations and communicate with appropriate NYU Berlin staff regarding any housing issues.
  • Provide emotional support to students as instructed by NYU Berlin's Wellness Counselor on the basis of trainings and other resources.
  • Assist in the organization and supervision of the weekly linen exchange.
  • Assist with the facilitation of fire drills once a semester.
  • Provide administrative support to the Student Life staff at the Academic Center. This may include filing, photocopying, and answering enquiries via phone, email and in person.
  • Participate in regular training and staff development sessions.
  • Offer regular 'office hours' to students both in person as well as virtually.
  • Submit contributions to the NYU Berlin newsletter and other communication channels as requested by Student Life staff.

Events and Activities (30%)

  • Organize regular activities to create a sense of community, i.e. student workshops and weekend events. Develop flyers, posters, and brochures.
  • Provide organizational support for a wide range of programs, such as volunteering opportunities, clubs and sport events.
  • Accompany students on excursions and 1-2 weekend trips per semester.

Student Safety and Wellness (25%)

  • Participate in the on-duty/on-call rotational emergency response and be available to respond to crises during scheduled evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Know University/community resources and make appropriate referrals.
  • Keep supervisors informed about all problems and concerns in the Student Residence.
  • Assist with the student conduct process by submitting incident reports to document cases of concern in a timely manner.
  • Participate in Wellness training seminars and diversity workshops.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education

  • Successful completion of a university degree.

Required Experience

  • 1-2 years work experience, incl. internships and student worker positions.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Fluency in German and English.
  • Excellent intercultural and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Service excellence and delivery of high-quality solutions.
  • Strong ability to engage meaningfully and inclusively with members of a diverse student community.
  • Exceptional time-management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, multitask, and handle emergencies.
  • Confident public speaking skills.
  • High level of flexibility and attention to detail.
  • Strong sense of teamwork as well as the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work on a few Saturdays per year.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and Google Drive

Required Work Permit

  • A valid work permit for Germany valid through December 2025.

Preferred Experience, Skills and Abilities

  • Study abroad experience (preferably within the context of U.S. universities).
  • Work experience in international education.
  • Experience in producing and editing texts in English (such as handbooks, newsletters, etc.).
  • Genuine interest in getting to know and developing support structures for a very diverse set of international students every semester.
  • Ability to organize and deliver events and trips for large groups.
