Job Description
Northlands Surgery is a growing practice with an expanding patient list, and we are looking for a dedicated and compassionate GP to join our friendly and supportive team for 6 sessions per week (negotiable). Situated in the beautiful and historic market town of Calne, our purpose-built practice is nestled in the countryside between Chippenham and Marlborough, just 15 minutes from the M4 and a 30-minute drive from Bath.

Main duties of the job The primary focus of this role is to help deliver safe and effective patient care to the patients at Northlands Surgery. The successful candidate will undertake a variety of clinical duties, including:
  • Conducting surgery consultations, including face-to-face and telephone consultations.
  • Visiting patients at home when required, providing continuity of care.
  • Reviewing and signing repeat prescriptions, addressing patient queries, and handling associated clinical paperwork.
  • Making professional and autonomous decisions on patient care, including both self-referred patients and those referred by other healthcare professionals within the practice.
  • Assessing and diagnosing patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed health issues.
  • Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
  • Developing personalised care plans in consultation with patients, ensuring they align with current disease management protocols and best practice guidelines.

Our clinical team includes Paramedics for home visits, Clinical Coders to review letters, Clinical Pharmacistand Pharmacy Technicians for medication management, First Contact Physiotherapist (FCP) for MSK triage, Social Prescribers linking patients to community services, and Care Coordinators to help navigate complex care pathways.

We embrace new ways of working, incorporating technologies like SystmConnect to enhance communication and improve patient access to services. We use SystmOne and Ardens for patient management and consistently achieve high QOF scores. Job responsibilities Job Description: Salaried GP

Role Overview:As a Salaried GP at Northlands Surgery, you will work within a collaborative and supportive environment, providing high-quality care to our patient population. You will be expected to manage patient consultations, contribute to administrative duties, and engage in professional development. You will also be involved in teaching and mentoring as part of our role as a training practice.

Daily Arrangements for Salaried GP Work:

Morning Session:
  • 8:30am - 1:15pm (4 hours 45 minutes)
    • Appointments: 13 x 15-minute consultations
    • Home Visit: 1 x 30-minute visit
    • Admin: 1 hour
Afternoon Session:
  • 2:30pm - 6:00pm (3 hours 35 minutes)
    • Appointments: 11 x 15-minute consultations
    • Admin: 50 minutes
Total Daily Time:
  • Appointments: 24 x 15-minute consultations and 1 x 30-minute visit (Total: 25 patient contacts)
Clinicians are expected to manage their own clinics efficiently, communicate delays with colleagues, and inform reception when necessary. Additional catch-up slots can be incorporated if required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

General Clinical Duties:
  • Consultations: Carry out patient appointments, home visits (as appropriate), and respond to queries from patients or other healthcare professionals.
  • Home Visits: Shared responsibility with GP team, paramedic practitioners, or ANPs based on patient need and workload.
  • Remote Consultations: Some clinics may be remote using approved technologies. Remote consultations can be carried out from home or another agreed location.
Duty Doctor Role:
  • Participate in the duty doctor role based on a fair-share system, ensuring coverage and timely patient care.
Enhanced Access Hours:
  • Work during enhanced access hours as scheduled, contributing to extended service delivery.
Administration and Paperwork:
  • Responsible for managing your own patient-related administrative tasks, including referrals, investigations, results, and patient queries.
  • Share responsibility for general clinical correspondence, repeat prescriptions, and patient-associated tasks like phone calls and emails.
QoF & Clinical Read Coding:
  • Monitor and accurately code patient data for Quality and Outcomes Framework (QoF) and other clinical requirements.
  • Use Ardens templates and ensure accurate read coding to maintain high data quality and compliance with contractual obligations.
Meetings:
  • Attend practice meetings, including team-based care discussions, clinical practice standards, protocol development, professional support, audit, significant event analysis, and multidisciplinary meetings with PCN colleagues.
Non-NHS Work:
  • Undertake a share of non-NHS work, including private reports, cremation certificates, and consultations. Fees are retained by the practice and will be invoiced in accordance with the Practices guidelines.
Audits and Clinical Quality:
  • Participate in and contribute to the audit process, including running cyclical audits to ensure continuous improvement in patient care.
Planning for Leave & Sickness:
  • Act as Principal GP when required for annual leave or sickness cover, either in a lone-working or locum tandem capacity. This will be arranged based on mutual agreement and competency assessments.
Additional Expectations:

Clinical Supervision and Teaching:
  • As a Senior Clinician, you will provide clinical supervision to non-GP healthcare professionals (HCPs) where appropriate.
  • Participate in the supervision and mentorship of GP Specialty Trainee (GPST) doctors and Student Placements as part of our teaching practice.
Personal Continuing Professional Development (CPD):
  • Maintain personal CPD, as required for revalidation and professional growth.
  • The practice will support CPD, including in-house meetings, external events, private study, and study leave allowance.
Practice Protocols and Policies:
  • Keep up to date with all practice protocols and policies, including Bluestream Online Training and other mandatory training programs.
Key Skills and Attributes:
  • Strong clinical knowledge and ability to make autonomous decisions in patient care.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work efficiently within a team-based environment.
  • Good communication skills, both with patients and colleagues, including administrative support staff.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement, including participation in audits, training, and professional development.
  • Experience in a training or teaching environment is desirable but not essential.
