Job Description

At EMBL's European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), we help scientists realise the potential of 'big data' in biology, exploiting complex information to make discoveries that benefit humankind.

Senior Scientific Officer

Scientific Services and Support
Hinxton, UK

We have an exciting opportunity for a talented, experienced and highly motivated Senior Scientific Officer to join the Industry Partnerships team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located at the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. The Industry Partnership team is responsible for the development, planning and delivery of partnership activities within EMBL-EBI, including the EMBL-EBI Industry Programme.

The EMBL-EBI Industry Programme is a subscription-based programme for global companies that make significant use of the data and resources provided by EMBL-EBI in core parts of their R&D. Member companies represent most of the top 20 pharmaceutical companies as well as several major agri-food, nutrition and consumer healthcare companies. The team provides support to the members through a planned programme of knowledge-exchange workshops, strategy meetings and projects aimed at exchange of expertise and information on state-of-the-art developments in computational biology and biodata.

Your role

Your main activity will involve planning, development and delivery of Industry Programme knowledge exchange workshops. This involves working with subject matter experts from the Industry Programme Member companies to establish the objectives, scope and intended outcomes of the workshop; develop the agenda; manage the process of speaker engagement; chair and deliver the workshop; and document the post-workshop outputs on the Member Area webpages.

You will also have an active role in another key initiative in the Industry Partnerships team - the development of the EMBL-EBI Agri-Tech Partnership. This is a collaboration with both private and public sector agricultural technology (agri-tech) domain experts. This partnership aims to build a fit-for-purpose EMBL-EBI AgriData Platform, integrating EMBL-EBI data and other publicly available data to support agricultural R&D in the fight to tackle global food security challenges. The partnership has already delivered high quality annotation of insect pest genomes within the Ensembl genome browser.

Finally, you will work with the Industry Partnership team to develop new relationships with the life-science sector beyond the Industry Programme.
